Attention: The following content may reveal plot details from the third episode of ‘The Last of Us’ season 2 and ‘The Last of Us Part II’. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
In an unexpected turn of events, The Last of Us season 2 introduces the enigmatic Seraphites earlier than anticipated. However, this early introduction doesn’t diminish the impact of Ellie’s initial encounter with this mysterious religious group. As Jackson ponders whether to dispatch a small team of 16 for revenge against Joel’s murderers, The Last of Us season 2, episode 3, titled “The Path,” abruptly shifts focus from the Seattle conflict to a forest clearing. Here, we are introduced to a cult whose members all bear facial scars.
In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie’s initial meeting with the Seraphites is one of the most startling scenes in the game. Given that the TV show has already introduced the Seraphites before Ellie reaches Seattle, it might appear challenging to replicate the same shocking impact from the original source material. However, by skillfully portraying the Seraphites as depicted thus far, the show can maintain the sense of dread and horror when Ellie first encounters this cult.
The Last Of Us Season 2 Introduced The Seraphites Much Earlier Than I Expected
The TV Show Introduced The Seraphites Before Ellie Even Got To Seattle
In my enthusiasm for the game, I was thrilled to witness the Seraphites brought to life on the TV show, as the trailers were brimming with captivating glimpses of them. However, I didn’t anticipate their introduction so soon. Unlike in the game where Ellie spends a day and a half in Seattle before encountering any Seraphites, she stumbles upon their presence much earlier through murals depicting their prophet, letters, religious symbols, and deceased members of the cult in the city.
However, she doesn’t meet the Seraphites face-to-face until an arrow wounds her while she’s walking through a park. Overcoming this initial group, she encounters another band of Seraphites executing a captive Wolf. Their brutal act of hanging the prisoner with a noose and carving into their belly is a harrowing experience that underscores these new adversaries as being equally menacing as the other hostile Seattle factions. It appears that the TV series may struggle to recreate the impact of this chilling moment.
The Seraphites’ Unexpected Brutality Will Still Make Ellie’s First Encounter Shocking
They’re Not As Innocent As They Look
Even though the television adaptation of “The Last of Us” has presented the Seraphites as a seemingly benevolent religious group thus far, being oppressed by the Wolves, it doesn’t diminish the shock when Ellie discovers their true brutality. It will still be a revelation for the audience to see that the Seraphites are not as innocent as they appear, engaging in acts of extreme violence such as ritualistically hanging and mutilating people. This unsettling truth will undoubtedly horrify the viewers of “The Last of Us.
