The Last of Us Season 2: Predicting What Happens in Neil Druckmann’s Episode

[WARNING: MILD SPOILERS FOR THE LAST OF US SEASON 2]

Many enthusiasts can’t wait to dive back into the universe of The Last of Us this coming April, and it’s intriguing to note that game director Neil Druckmann will be directly involved in one episode, specifically Episode 6.

From the way Druckmann describes it, gamers could likely infer the events of that episode without specific details being disclosed.

“I’m Very Proud of It”

Talking with Variety (via @DomTheBombYT) during the red carpet for The Last of Us Season 2, Druckmann was asked about the episode he directed—Episode 6— and this was his reply:

This particular episode holds a unique charm as it delves deeply into the essence of the series through beloved characters – without revealing too much to avoid spoilers. I’m hopeful that both the show’s enthusiasts and game fans will find it emotionally stirring, just as I am while working on it, during editing and color correction.

druckmann doesn’t provide explicit information about the content of his episode, but it seems plausible that he might be hinting at a flashback scene involving Joel and Ellie. Druckmann further states, “Everyone put in a tremendous amount of effort, but our actors, especially for this episode, seemed to pour a part of their soul into it. I’m extremely proud of it.

What Happens in Episode 6?

Given the structure of the season, viewers are guessing that the second season will primarily deal with the initial half of the game, where Ellie is on a quest for revenge in Seattle. If Druckmann’s episode is Episode 6 – the penultimate episode of the season – it seems plausible that his episode will feature a flashback between Ellie and Joel, including their celebration of Ellie’s 16th birthday, as well as the moment when Joel reveals to Ellie that he had been deceiving her about the Fireflies.

While some might speculate that this episode delves into Abby’s past, Druckmann himself clarifies that the focus is on ‘characters we hold dear’. Given that the game intentionally makes players initially dislike Abby, it’s plausible that Druckmann isn’t referring to her in this context.

In essence, while Abby’s story will likely dominate the third season, viewers can anticipate glimpses into her backstory during Season 2 as well. This will help paint a complete picture of why she finds herself in Jackson at the start of the narrative.

If the series manages to capture the intended emotions the game aims to evoke, it promises a truly captivating emotional journey for the viewers.

Wait and See

Well, fans might find themselves in a position where they need to be patient and observe as events unfold. While the initial season did stray from certain aspects of the original narrative, it certainly stayed true to the fundamental ideas embedded within the game.

It’s possible that the fan theories could be correct, but if we take Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann at their word, they’ll likely do their utmost to keep viewers guessing.

Catch The Last of Us Season 2 when it premieres on Max this April 13.
