In a recent interview, HBO CEO Casey Bloys provided significant updates on the potential release date for Season 3 of “The Last of Us,” as well as sharing fresh insights about its timeline, co-creator Neil Druckmann’s departure, and showrunner Craig Mazin’s plans for the series’ future.

Casey Bloys confirms The Last of Us Season 3 release date window

According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, The Last of Us Season 3 has already been scheduled for release in 2027. In a conversation with Variety, he mentioned that showrunner Craig Mazin is still debating whether the narrative will be presented as one extended season or split into two more installments. “A decision hasn’t been made yet, and I’m letting Craig guide the way on this,” Bloys explained.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share the news that Neil Druckmann, one of the brilliant minds behind the series, has decided to focus on his primary role as head of Naughty Dog and game development for now. This means he won’t be directly involved in the new season. Yet, we have every reason to remain hopeful, for Bloys, our trusted showrunner, has faithfully pointed out that Druckmann has laid a strong foundation for us with his vision. Notably, he highlighted Mazin as a “pro,” someone whose skills and dedication will undoubtedly guide the series forward in his stead.

As a devoted fan, I’m reassured that, despite shifts in cast and character dynamics, HBO remains untroubled about promoting “Game of Thrones” Season 3. They even mentioned that the title benefits from the video game’s recognition, and the first two seasons have solidified their presence.

This year’s show garnered an impressive 16 Emmy nominations, contributing to a remarkable total of 142 nominations for HBO and Max collectively. Regarding this achievement, Bloys expressed his delight, stating, “I’m overjoyed when I consider the team at HBO and the talented individuals who decide to collaborate with us, as they richly deserve the recognition they receive.” He specifically recognized key contributors such as Francesca Orsi (in charge of drama), Amy Gravitt (overseeing comedy), and Sarah Aubrey (Max Originals).

Bloys hasn’t specified an exact release date closer than 2027, but he’s made it clear that the production process is already in motion. With Druckmann’s blueprint and Mazin’s creative vision guiding the way, HBO is gearing up to carry on with the adaptation, remaining steadfastly dedicated.

HBO has not announced any casting updates or episode counts for Season 3 at this time.
