This episode of the show delivered an exhilarating dose of non-stop action, marking the first time that the small screen version of the widely acclaimed video game surpassed our anticipations in terms of scale and intensity. Previous firefights were intense, but this time, the spectacle was unprecedented.
As a passionate cinephile, I must express my disappointment with the latest installment of our beloved series. In Jackson, Wyoming, where Ellie and Joel have settled over the past few years, the chaos is palpable – yet nothing quite compares to the adrenaline rush of the big war when the infected attack. Regrettably, this episode fails to do justice to one of the scariest creatures in our world: the Bloater. Despite setting it up for a truly terrifying climax, the series disappointingly ends its portrayal of the Bloater in an anticlimactic and underwhelming fashion.
What Happens to the Bloater in The Last of Us?
Season 2’s Bloater Fizzles Out and Slumps Over After a Flame Bath
From the frozen expanse, this Bloater and other contaminated beings surge forward towards the settlement at high speed. Despite the hail of bullets and inferno, they manage to break through the fortifications, leading to a horde of monsters assaulting the people. Even though they release dogs, Tommy is well aware that his top priority is this Bloater, as it’s a particularly potent creature that the Cordyceps virus transforms infected into.
The Bloater resembles the Hulk in size, yet sports spores and fungus that make it appear similar to The Thing. It also boasts a royal-looking, crowned head. However, despite Tommy’s attempts, its tough shell proves difficult to penetrate. This mirrors the challenges faced in the game, where powerful weapons like flamethrowers or Molotov cocktails might be effective, but significant effort would be required. Eventually, the beast corners Tommy in a narrow alleyway.
As the tanks’ fuel and pressure dwindle, it appears as though the colossal beast is about to claim Tommy’s life. Yet, instead of a dramatic finale, the Bloater simply exhausts itself and succumbs. This was quite underwhelming, considering the intense build-up. It feels unfair to end such a menacing character with a lackluster demise, especially given the Bloater’s destructive nature in “The Last of Us” game. In The Last of Us Season 1, Episode 5, one in Missouri demonstrated its signature move: overpowering someone and tearing their head off violently.
In a more engaging and conversational manner: Instead of having the Bloater harm Tommy, which might have added a unique twist to the TV show, they could have used the Bloater to challenge Tommy in an unconventional way. Regrettably, the death of the Bloater missed an opportunity to boost another character’s significance, and instead, it turned into comical slapstick.

The Bloater Could Have Shown Maria’s Ruthless Side
This battle unfolds simultaneously within a mountain lodge, constructed especially for the show. This setting instills a feeling of unease in Joel regarding the camp. It’s an opportunity to boost the characters’ reputation at the haven, pushing them to display more resilience and determination as their instincts sharpen. Maria might exhibit her survival skills and save Tommy. She witnesses the predicament as she shoots from the rooftops.
In the style of Sofia from John Wick, if I were to take charge of the dogs, carving a path towards Tommy, and brandishing my own flamethrower, it would have been quite an epic sight. Perhaps Molotov cocktails, or maybe even a grenade (ensuring Tommy’s safety, naturally) could have underscored that I am not just a politician, manager, or mayor; I am also a soldier. Showing my military side would serve as a reminder to everyone that understanding tactics and strategy is crucial because warfare can erupt at any moment.
If things had turned out differently, the Bloater’s tenacity and brutal nature would have remained evident, while another character would’ve taken center stage as a protector. This raises an intriguing question: Why go through all the trouble of arranging everything on the battlefield when Maria was there in the snowy wilderness to intervene? It would have made sense for the narrative, considering that Maria values her child’s father deeply. Family matters greatly to them, and this could have been contrasted with Joel’s predicament. Since Ellie couldn’t rescue one brother, Maria could have saved the other in this scenario.

In a different scenario, connecting Blobter (Bloater) with Ellie earlier in the story might have created an intriguing plot twist when it was time for Ellie to confront Abby. This alternative approach would have enriched the narrative by highlighting both the heroic and villainous aspects of the story. In essence, the climax of the story featuring Blobter seems underdeveloped. The idea is chilling but required a more satisfying resolution. This change would have introduced an unexpected factor to an episode that, while gripping, was somewhat predictable in its progression.
