As a passionate advocate for diversity and representation in the entertainment industry, I am thrilled to see initiatives like The Latinx House‘s $6 million film and television fund. Having spent years watching Latine talent being underrepresented, it’s heartening to witness such a significant step towards rectifying that imbalance.
The Latinx House collaborates with the Adobe Foundation to establish a $6 million funding program for films and TV shows.
The new project aims to foster upcoming movie directors by offering assistance through two schemes: The Gloria Schoemann Editors Fellowship, an honor named after the late and productive Mexican film editor, and the Proof of Concept Program, which offers initial funding for projects that tell genuine stories from a Latine perspective. These initiatives are intended to tackle the lack of representation among Latine talent in the entertainment industry.
The Gloria Schoemann Editors Fellowship is offering support to bilingual editors specializing in scripted features. The mentors for this fellowship are Waldemar Centeno, known for his work on ‘Gentefied’, Joaquin Elizondo from ‘Narcos: Mexico’, and Carla Gutiérrez who has worked on ‘Frida’. The chosen fellows for this year include Mario Fierro, a videographer for Cardi B, Maria Gabriela Torres who edited ‘True Justice: Bryan Stevenson’s Fight for Equality’, and Alejandra Armijo, editor of ‘Andromeda’.
Olga Segura, co-founder of The Latinx House, expressed gratitude for Adobe Foundation’s support. This backing enables us not just to fund Latine filmmakers but also to honor the remarkable legacy of Gloria Schoemann, whose exceptional and pioneering editing career left an indelible mark on the film industry.
The Proof of Concept Program aids Latine filmmakers who have successfully premiered their films at festivals, as they move on to subsequent projects. Notable filmmaker Oren Moverman (known for “The Messenger”), Marc Forster (“World War Z”), and producer Jay Van Hoy (“The Lighthouse”) chose the two finalists for this program – Yolanda Cruz and Isabel Castro.
