Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World
No Thanks, Keep Reading
Fans of Marvel have experienced the unsettling sensation of being misled before, thanks to some cunningly deceptive advertising tactics, and it appears that the studio known for going to great lengths to maintain secrecy until the premiere has done so again – albeit unintentionally this time. The trailers have revealed a significant amount of Harrison Ford as the Red Hulk (nearly all his scenes, in fact), but there’s been almost no sign of Tim Blake Nelson’s character Samuel Sterns, also known as The Leader, in promotional materials. Moreover, the only clear image of him is not his actual appearance in the film.
In the final trailer, Sterns was only briefly visible, mostly shrouded in shadow. Yet, merchandise depicts him with a small beard and a large, round head. However, for those who watched the movie during its initial release, The Leader’s appearance is far more grotesque than what’s portrayed on any promotional materials.
In “Brave New World,” Marvel Studios chose to deviate from traditional depictions of The Leader, giving him a mutated brain instead of the iconic domed head. This grotesque and detailed design might explain why we’ve seen so little of this character before the movie’s release this weekend. Was it to keep some surprises for the audience, or was there genuine concern about fan reactions to the character’s transformed appearance?
‘Brave New World’ Takes a Gamble In Changing The Leader’s Classic Design
In 2008, Samuel Sterns, also known as the Abomination, debuted in the MCU through the film “The Incredible Hulk”. His last appearance showed him being subjected to gamma radiation that flowed through Bruce Banner’s blood. After a long wait of 16 years, fans were eagerly anticipating this plot point to unfold in “Captain America: Brave New World”. Based on early character images from toys and collectibles, fans expected a screen adaptation true to the comics, featuring the iconic bulbous-headed mastermind. However, Marvel Studios took a different approach in the film, potentially risking disappointment among the audience.
It appears that some viewers are expressing their disappointment with the portrayal of The Leader in the movie, as seen in reactions on Twitter. @MrMaxMarriner expressed his disapproval by saying, “I’ve been a fan of The Leader since childhood (being a big Hulk fan), and what this movie does to him is unforgivable.” Another user, @WilliamD1123, criticized the design of The Leader in Brave New World, stating that it ironically resembles something Marvel might have done during their early phases when they were hesitant to go fully comic-accurate. Lastly, @SammyJReacts was not pleased with the size of The Leader’s head in the movie, commenting that it was too small both physically and metaphorically, expressing a need for more of The Leader’s head to be shown.
On the contrary, some found themselves quite pleased with the revamped appearance of The Leader in Brave New World, and overall enjoyed the film. @TheEricGoldman commented on the updated design, saying, “The redesign of The Leader was a smart move, though it’s amusing that the merchandise still sports the old design. He has an inherent goofiness about him, but the more unsettling final version was fitting and the movie’s portrayal aligns more with his second comic book look.
Despite Marvel Studios typically employing strategic misdirection prior to a film’s release, the alterations undergone by “Brave New World” during production appear to be the primary reason for the shift in the movie’s visual elements this time around. Initially, images of The Leader depicted in merchandise related to the film seemed to be based on the original, more comic-faithful design of the character. However, as the tone of the movie evolved towards a darker direction, it seems that The Leader’s appearance was among the significant changes implemented.
It’s unclear whether Marvel Studios intentionally kept the old designs to conceal the truth or not, but the appearance of The Leader appears to be as divisive as many opinions about the movie itself. The days when everyone agreed on Marvel are long past, but that hasn’t stopped Captain America: Brave New World from delivering an impressive opening day performance, which puts it on track for a $100 million four-day domestic gross.
