As an ardent movie enthusiast who has followed Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s careers since their debut, I am disheartened by the continuous political drama surrounding The Legend of Maula Jatt. I have always admired their talent and the magic they bring to the silver screen, transcending borders and languages.
Once more, the upcoming Pakistani movie titled The Legend of Maula Jatt, featuring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, set to release in India on October 2, 2024, is facing opposition from Indian political parties. Specifically, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has announced their intention to prevent the film’s screening within the country. The party leader made it clear that they have no intentions of allowing any Pakistani films or actors in India.
Ameya Khopkar, president of the MNS Cinema Wing, communicated to ANI that they will refuse to show any Pakistani films or employ Pakistani actors in India, and furthermore encouraged individuals in other regions to protest the screenings as well. In essence, he declared that the specified movie will not be shown, and moreover, they have no intention of allowing any future Pakistani films or actors to gain a foothold in India, warning that such actions could lead to significant protests.
In simpler terms, he made clear that he too communicates with individuals and political entities in different regions to challenge the influence of Pakistani performers in those places. He voiced worry about the loss of soldiers at border conflicts and urban attacks, expressing doubt as to why Pakistani artists are needed when there is already a wealth of local talent available.
He cautioned cinema owners about potential repercussions, noting that they are well aware of the high costs associated with the glass in their theaters. He warned that any Pakistani actor who attempts to come to India would face consequences. While he acknowledged the distinction between art and politics, he emphasized that they do not want art at the expense of their soldiers, asserting that they would prevent such actors from entering the country.
He remarked that this should be regarded as a threat, questioning how anyone could consider watching movies featuring Pakistani actors given the attacks that occurred as recently as last week. He expressed a firm stance against allowing them to set foot in India, stating that they would take action against them.
In 2016, after the Uri terror attack, a prohibition was enforced preventing Pakistani artists from working within India. However, in November of 2023, the Supreme Court declined an appeal seeking a total ban on Pakistani performers or workers in India. Actors like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan have previously worked in Indian films; Fawad was featured in movies such as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Khoobsurat, while Mahira made her Bollywood debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the film Raees.
