As a lifestyle expert with a rich global perspective, I must say that the decision to cancel the release of Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s The Legend of Maula Jatt in India is indeed disheartening. Having lived and worked across multiple continents, I’ve seen firsthand the power of art and cinema to bridge cultural divides and foster understanding among people.
As an ardent admirer, I had eagerly anticipated the groundbreaking moment when Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan’s masterpiece, The Legend of Maula Jatt, would grace Indian screens for the first time in a decade and a half. Alas, recent whispers hint at the unfortunate cancellation of this highly-anticipated premiere due to an overwhelming outcry from certain political factions. This action-packed drama was poised to captivate audiences across the Punjab region on October 2nd this year.
Reports claim that the release of The Legend of Maula Jatt was delayed due to the fact that no Indian films have been allowed in Pakistan since 2019. To clarify, The Legend of Maula Jatt is a modern retelling of the famous folk story about Maula Jatt. The story primarily focuses on the intense rivalry between Noori Natt (played by Hamza Ali Abbasi), a ruthless gang leader, and the beloved hero, Maula Jatt (portrayed by Fawad Khan).
In Pakistan, this story has been a timeless box office hit. With Zee Studios overseeing its distribution in India, The Legend of Maula Jatt had great prospects for success in Indian cinemas. However, as soon as it was announced that the film would be released, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) expressed opposition to its screenings.
A few days ago, Ameya Khopkar, head of the MNS Cinema Wing, informed ANI that the specified film would not be distributed in India. Moreover, he declared that they would reject any Pakistani films or actors operating within India. He further warned of significant protests if the movie was released, and stated that any Pakistani actor who dares to visit India could face physical confrontation.
As Khopkar states, art and politics may differ, but he strongly believes that our soldiers’ welfare should not be compromised for the sake of art. He emphasized, “This statement should be viewed as a warning… Attacks have occurred up until last week, and we will continue to watch movies featuring Pakistani actors? We won’t allow them to set foot on our soil, we will shatter their ambitions… Cinema owners are fully aware that the glass in their theaters is quite costly…
For those not familiar, the restriction on Pakistani artists performing in India started following the Uri terrorist attack in 2016, which caused widespread disturbance. However, despite multiple attempts to overturn this ban through legal channels, no definitive resolution has been reached as of now.
