The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom rating seemingly spoils a major plot twist

As a long-time fan of The Legend of Zelda series, I was thrilled when Nintendo announced that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom would finally give us a fully playable Zelda experience. After decades of watching Link save Hyrule and its princesses from various perils, it felt like it was time for Zelda to step into the spotlight.

It was assumed that this world belonged to women, or so the trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom suggested – a long-awaited opportunity for Princess Zelda to take center stage in her own game. After decades of playing second fiddle to Link, it looks like our resilient princess is lastly being given her moment in the limelight.

Prior to the release of Tears of the Kingdom, there were discussions about having a playable Zelda character or giving her a dedicated game, considering the series is named after her. We didn’t have to wait long as Nintendo Direct in June confirmed that Echoes of Wisdom would indeed include a fully-playable Zelda. However, what about Link’s role in this new game?

Echoes of Wisdom rating teases major Link twist

In Echoes of Wisdom, the role of damsel in distress is reversed as Zelda takes on Link’s usual heroic actions. Rather than wielding a sword against Bokoblins, she employs magical abilities to summon various objects and adversaries.

Despite the fact that critics have come around to viewing this game as primarily about Zelda, an ESRB rating hints that Link will make an appearance, allowing players to wield a sword and arrows to battle adversaries.

In simpler terms, some believe that you’ll begin the game controlling Link, but he’ll be kidnapped early on and Zelda will then assume the role. Alternatively, others assume that Link will appear in other parts of the game or may even be unlocked as a playable character towards the end, allowing you to experience the entire adventure as him, specifically as the Kokiri outcast.

On the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, opinions varied regarding this proposal. One supporter expressed, “I’d be thrilled if there was a second world where actions taken by Zelda impact Link and vice versa. They’ve explored this idea in Link to the Past and the Oracle games as well.”

I found an intriguing suggestion from another fan: “It would be cool if there was a second quest where you get to play as different characters in a Castlevania-like manner. However, in my opinion, it doesn’t seem like something that would fit with the ‘you finally get to play as Zelda’ game.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when the spotlight shifts from Zelda in a new game, especially since there’s been so much excitement built around her being the central character. However, I understand that Link’s enduring popularity and storied past make it a smart business decision for us to embark on another adventure as him or explore a fresh part of Hyrule.

Based on the trailers, it appears that Link will be controllable in Echoes of Wisdom for its initial stages. However, the extent of his involvement beyond this point is yet to be determined.
