As a film reviewer who has spent decades immersed in the cinematic universe, I must say that The Life of Chuck has left me spellbound. Having had the privilege to witness some of the most iconic stories brought to life on screen, this adaptation stands out as a unique and poignant masterpiece.
The novella that stood out most in Stephen King’s collection titled “If It Bleeds” was the one that captured the attention of filmmaker Mike Flanagan. This story, much like King’s best work, delves into heavy themes but does so with a tremendous amount of emotional depth. Recently, Flanagan’s movie adaptation had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, and it has received favorable reviews since then.
At the TIFF, Vanity Fair conversed with director Flanagan and main actor Tom Hiddleston, and they both feel that this new adaptation is unique and unlike other films often associated with a renowned living author. With comments from the cast in recent months (including Heather Langenkamp from “A Nightmare on Elm Street”), it’s not hard to agree with them. In Hiddleston’s own words:
Indeed, he has penned down something incredibly heartfelt and insightful. I believe that the narrative embodies profound wisdom, suggesting that it requires bravery to cling to the virtuous amidst a world seemingly disintegrating.
The narrative unfolds with events depicted from latest to earliest, making it somewhat unconventional for a movie. If the plot is followed faithfully, it begins in a more somber state than it ends, shedding light on its unique nature. Flanagan elaborated on this initial gloominess and its relevance to our contemporary world.
It seems as though each generation experiences a sense of impending doom about the world at certain points, but I can’t help but feel that our situation is unique. Pillars of our society that were once considered unshakable are crumbling rapidly. The quality of our politics has deteriorated significantly. There’s an overwhelming feeling that things are falling apart, that the world is changing rapidly. When I converse with my elders or individuals from older generations who have weathered their own stormy periods, what stands out to me is their agreement – ‘Yes, this is truly terrible.’
The Life of Chuck Can Be a New King Masterpiece
In a slightly different direction from his previous works, “The Life of Chuck” deviates for Flanagan. Known for adapting horror classics like “Gerald’s Game” and “Doctor Sleep”, this is his first King adaptation that predominantly steers clear of the chilling elements. Instead, “The Life of Chuck” portrays a life-ending event not meant to instill fear, but rather serves as an opportunity for that person to deeply appreciate what truly makes their life extraordinary.
Flanagan stated that King harbored doubts about whether the story could be effectively transformed into a film. However, despite these reservations from the author, King himself referred to the adaptation as “a source of happiness.” So far, most critics concur with this assessment. Yet, it remains uncertain when fans will finally get to watch the movie, as The Life of Chuck does not yet have a confirmed release date.
