The Mandalorian And Grogu’s Latest Casting Has Me Wondering If A Major Ahsoka Character Will Also Appear In The Star Wars Movie

As someone who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vast expanse of Star Wars lore and the intricate tapestry of characters that populate it, I must say, the news about Jonny Coyne returning as an Imperial warlord in The Mandalorian & Grogu has me intrigued, but not entirely enthused. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate a good cameo as much as the next fan, but if we’re talking about stirring up excitement, it’s characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn that do it for me.

Following three thrilling seasons on Disney+ captivating “Star Wars” enthusiasts, Din Djarin and Grogu are readying themselves to showcase their skills and enchantment on the silver screen. The duo from “The Mandalorian & Grogu” is scheduled for a 2026 release in the upcoming “Star Wars” film lineup, with Jeremy Allen White recently rumored to voice Rotta the Hutt within this movie. Now, there’s news of another casting development, leaving me curious if a significant character from the “Ahsoka” series might also be part of this intergalactic story unfolding in a distant galaxy.

An Imperial Warlord Will Return In The Mandalorian & Grogu

As reported by Deadline, Jonny Coyne will once again portray the Imperial warlord he played earlier in “The Mandalorian” Season 3 episode “Chapter 23: The Spies”. This character, who remains unnamed, is a member of the Shadow Council – an elite group of Imperial officials covertly attempting to resurrect the Empire during the initial phase of the New Republic era. Notable figures present at this gathering also included Moff Gideon, Commandant Brendan Hue (father of The First Order’s Armitage Hux), and Captain Gilad Pellaeon, who has strong connections with Grand Admiral Thrawn.

In the latest addition to the cast of “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” Timothy Olyphant, known for shows like “11.22.63” and “The Blacklist,” joins Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver. The specific roles these newcomers will play have yet to be revealed. Pedro Pascal is set to reprise his role as the Mandalorian in this upcoming film, marking the 13th installment of the Star Wars series. On the production side, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, executive producers of the show, are credited with writing the movie’s script. Additionally, Favreau, who created the series, will also be directing the film.

Will Thrawn Also Appear In The Mandalorian & Grogu?

No disrespect to Jonny Coyne, but hearing that this particular Imperial warlord is in The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn’t get me any more excited for the movie than I already am. But now I’m wondering, what if his inclusion means other members of the Shadow Council will be back for the movie? And if that’s the case, what if there’s a figure who will unite these Imperial officers following Moff Gideon’s (supposed) demise. To put it simply, I’m speculating that Lars Mikkelsen might reprise Grand Admiral Thrawn in The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Following his initial portrayal of a character in Star Wars Rebels, Mikkelsen appeared as Thrawn in live-action during Ahsoka’s first season. In this series, it was unveiled that Thrawn had spent years marooned on Peridea, a distant planet. At the conclusion of Season 1, Thrawn and the Great Mothers returned to the primary Star Wars galaxy, leading them to Dathomir, the homeworld of the Nightsisters. Although fans are hoping for more Thrawn appearances in Ahsoka’s second season, as of now, no information about his return has been disclosed.

As a gamer, I’m not saying that Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ahsoka Tano won’t meet again in the future, but with Thrawn back in his old stomping grounds, it’s plausible to imagine him consolidating these Imperial groups to focus on Project Necromancer and any fresh strategies he cooks up. If that turns out to be a threat, Din Djarin, Grogu, and their comrades would certainly step up for a fight. Moreover, this could pave the way for the New Republic movie that Dave Filoni is directing, which aims to connect the storylines from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew.

I’m just brainstorming, but if Thrawn turns up in The Mandalorian & Grogu, we’ll keep you informed. The film, which concluded shooting this month, is set for release on May 22, 2026.
