The Mandalorian & Grogu Footage Screened at D23 to Wild Applause

As a seasoned cinematic voyager who has navigated the cosmos of Star Wars since the original trilogy graced our screens, I can confidently say that the news about The Mandalorian and Grogu’s big-screen adventure fills me with unbridled excitement! With my memory banks overflowing with epic battles on Hoth and the iconic clanking of AT-AT walkers, I eagerly await the silver Beskar metal-clad bounty hunter and baby Yoda’s return.

The dynamic duo, The Mandalorian and Grogu, are reunited once more as filming for the first Star Wars movie since 2019 commenced about two weeks back in late July. Renowned director Jon Favreau (known for Iron Man and The Mandalorian) along with co-writer and producer Dave Filoni graced the stage at D23, addressing a gathering of 15,000 enthusiastic fans. They unveiled a sneak peek of the upcoming film, with Filoni expressing his eagerness about Star Wars returning to the big screen. “With this being the last D23 before the movie’s release, we thought it was essential to share something,” he added (as reported by Deadline). Here’s a glimpse at what they shared:

In a recently released clip, as reported by Deadline, the bounty hunter clad in silver Beskar armor and baby Yoda are seen touching fingers. Additionally, Babu Frick can be seen piloting a ship alongside Grogu, which led to an excited response from the crowd. The scene also showcases a snowy planet resembling Hoth from “Empire Strikes Back,” complete with colossal AT-AT walkers.

The story of The Mandalorian and his young Jedi companion is set to continue on the big screen, as was initially announced in January. The creator of The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau, will once again take the helm for this project, working together with Dave Filoni, Executive Vice President at Lucasfilm and Star Wars expert, on both writing and directing duties. Back when the news broke, Favreau expressed his enthusiasm about bringing The Mandalorian and Grogu to the silver screen.

“It’s been a joy for me to spin tales within the intricate universe that George Lucas developed. The idea of translating the adventures of the Mandalorian and his ward, Grogu, onto the silver screen is incredibly thrilling.”

Introduced in 2019, the space western series “The Mandalorian” features Pedro Pascal (also known for his role in “The Last of Us”). Set about five years post “Return of the Jedi”, this show unfolds after the fall of the Galactic Empire. It follows a solitary gunfighter traversing the chaotic fringes of the galaxy. The series also introduced a cultural phenomenon, affectionately known as Baby Yoda, later named Grogu. This enigmatic, Force-sensitive young creature shares a species lineage with Jedi Master Yoda.

Over three seasons, The Mandalorian has taken center stage, and in the latest episode, we see the once solitary bounty hunter, Din Djarin, reconnecting with Grogu. Meanwhile, the New Republic faces challenges in guiding the galaxy towards a brighter future, free from its past darkness. Throughout the show, The Mandalorian encounters old friends and makes new foes as he and Grogu embark on their shared adventure.

The Mandalorian has been a monumental hit for Star Wars and Disney+, with all three seasons being met with critical acclaim. Though the reaction to Season 3 from audiences was mixed, sadly bringing the franchise into the divisive gauntlet that Star Wars often finds itself in during this modern era. Regardless, The Mandalorian has itself led to all manner of spinoffs, including The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. The latter of which has helped Dave Filoni shape the opening of The Mandalorian & Grogu

“Since I’ve been working on Ahsoka Season 2, everything seems to be falling into place, giving me a clearer vision of where the story is heading. I must admit, I have an opening that I find quite intriguing, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m also thrilled about the possibilities of bringing it to life…At the moment, my main focus is on Ahsoka, as well as the broader galaxy and how everything is unfolding.”

The Mandalorian & Grogu
movie is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2026.
