'The Merry Gentlemen' Brings Strippers to Netflix's Christmas Party, but with a Terrible Rotten Tomatoes Score

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a penchant for all things festive and cinematic, I must confess that my heart skips a beat when I see another Christmas movie gracing our screens. The latest addition to Netflix’s Yuletide collection, “The Merry Gentlemen,” has certainly caught the eye of many, but unfortunately, it seems to have missed the mark for me.

Netflix has expanded its collection of Christmas movies further with “The Merry Gentlemen,” a film that debuted at the top of global movie charts. Starring Hilarie Burton and Britt Robertson, who are known for their roles in “One Tree Hill” and “Freaky Friday” respectively, this festive flick is certainly not one to miss if you’ve been keeping up with Netflix’s weekly dose of Christmas cheer this year. Following the success of “Hot Frosty,” “The Merry Gentlemen” can be considered another delightful holiday offering – but with a twist! This time around, the story revolves around a group of individuals trying to save a bar from closure by transforming it into a strip club. So, if you’ve got the kids gathered around the tree, this one’s for them too!

In “The Merry Gentlemen,” Robertson’s character Ashley is a former dancer who returns to her small hometown for Christmas, but finds her parents’ bar facing closure due to mounting debts. To save the bar from eviction, she devises an ingenious solution: transform the local handyman (Murray) into a stripper, hoping that this unconventional move will bring in enough money.

If it seems overly generic, simple, and somewhat confusing, you would be correct. Unlike the surprisingly acclaimed film “Hot Frosty” that managed to receive a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes despite its absurd “snowman comes to life as a hunky guy” plotline, “The Merry Gentlemen” has not been kindly received by either critics or audiences.

Is Netflix’s The Merry Gentlemen Worth Watching?

If you go by the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the general consensus appears to be a negative one. As of writing, only seven critics have weighed in, with five of those reviews being unfavorable. The reasons cited for the film’s lackluster performance include it being described as “Magic Mike without its charm,” the two main actors seeming “tired,” and the movie being merely a “filler” that is an “obligation” for some studios during this specific season.

Viewers might struggle to find much holiday cheer from this movie, as seven out of eleven reviews have given it a rating of two stars or lower. Those who rate it higher appear to do so primarily because they enjoy watching Murray and his friends display their boxer shorts – which is essentially all that’s on offer, contrary to any expectations for more substance. To quote Stephanie H: “It seems there’s not much more seasonal joy to be found here.

The dance moves were awkward and the acting was poor; it felt unnatural and awkward to observe what appeared as supposed dancers.

As a film enthusiast, I must say that “The Merry Gentlemen” is currently stealing the show, with “Hot Frosty” moving down to second place. Meanwhile, “Meet Me Next Christmas,” once a chart-topper, is still hanging in there at number seven. With more heartwarming, albeit occasionally forgettable, festive films on their way, I have no doubt that we’ll continue to see these wintry gems dominating Netflix throughout the holiday season.
