As a long-time fan of fantasy and cult series, I must say this year has been quite a disappointment for us enthusiasts. The cancellation of shows like “My Lady Jane”, “Dead Boy Detectives”, “Dead Boy Detectives”, “Kaos”, and “Our Flag Means Death” feels like a punch to the gut.
2024, what a wild ride it’s been! The small screen hasn’t been any quieter either. As we all know, the TV industry is always spinning its wheels, but not every new series that debuted this year had a soft landing. For every fresh show that bowed this year or will do so, there were several series that bid their farewells. Some of these endings were foreseen, some took us by surprise, and a few left us absolutely stunned. I, for one, can’t wait to see what the rest of this roller coaster year has in store!
This year saw several popular shows, ranging from a cult pirate drama with a loyal fanbase, to a critically-adored musical comedy, a beloved franchise favorite, and a highly-anticipated fantasy series with a vast audience, all face the harsh reality of cancellation. These cancellations came as quite a shock, even to some of the creators themselves. Here’s a rundown of the most unexpected and jaw-dropping series terminations that have occurred so far this year.
Schmigadoon!
In a unique blend of comedy and music, “Schmigadoon!” captivated both critics and audiences alike with its original tunes, dance routines, and choreography. Similar to the critically acclaimed musical comedy “Galavant,” however, “Schmigadoon!” was unable to sustain its cult following and was unfortunately canceled after completing two seasons. The series revolved around the romantic struggles of Melissa Gimble (played by Cecily Strong) and Josh Skinner (portrayed by Keegan-Michael Key), two doctors whose relationship was on the rocks. While hiking, they stumbled upon the enchanting musical town of Schmigadoon and found themselves unable to escape its cheerful boundaries. They were informed that they could only leave if they found true love – a challenge they faced as they navigated their feelings for each other.
In Season 2, they playfully mimicked musicals originating from the ’60s and ’70s such as “Chicago” and “Cabaret,” by setting their story in the gritty, noir-inspired city of Schmicago. The characters are entangled in a disillusioned urban landscape, attempting to escape their marital dissatisfaction while seeking a joyful conclusion.
The finale of “Schmigadoon!” left its audience and creators taken aback, as Apple TV+ had already finalized 25 songs and scripts for Season 3 before making their decision. Co-creator Cinco Paul expressed his hope on Instagram that the show wouldn’t end there, suggesting it might instead be a promising start to new adventures. For now, it seems “Schmigadoon!” is among the unexpected cancellations of 2024.
The Flight Attendant
In an unusual turn of events, it was the lead actress, Kaley Cuoco, rather than the network, who decided the fate of ‘The Flight Attendant’. Despite Max wanting a third season of the quirky, dark comedy-drama, Cuoco felt that her character’s story had reached its conclusion after two seasons and chose not to renew her contract for further episodes.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve consistently imagined ‘The Flight Attendant’ as a limited series. Remarkably, with an outstanding creative team on board, we managed to serve up two exhilarating seasons. In a personal sense, embodying Cassie has been a lifelong dream, and I am deeply thankful for everyone who contributed their efforts in transforming this exceptionally original concept into reality.
The show revolves around Cassie Bowden, a free-spirited flight attendant, who has an intoxicated night that links her to a serious criminal affair. By the second season, she’s acquired the skills and credentials needed for espionage work, operating as a double-agent. As the series progresses, Cassie grapples with her self-doubt, which stems from within herself. However, she manages to overcome these internal struggles, transforming into an exceptional spy. This personal growth might suggest that further seasons of the show could be less compelling.
Minx
Minx,” initially canceled, has found new life by moving networks, first to Max and then to Starz. However, neither network seemed suitable for this intelligent, feminist series. It’s surprising that Starz decided to cancel the show without giving it a longer chance, but after two seasons, it became associated with the adult magazines that are emblematic of America’s cultural history.
The story revolves around Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond), a college student with aspirations, planning to launch a women’s adult magazine. Her path takes her through the seedy side of Los Angeles’ porn industry, where she meets Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson), who could potentially make all her dreams a reality. However, external pressures and personal ambitions might transform her dreams into a terrifying reality instead.
It was speculated by at least one of the show’s creators that Season 3 could have been produced, with Paul Feig expressing his desire to introduce Doug’s former wife and Joyce’s mother as characters. However, it seems those ideas will remain unrealized and confined to viewers’ imaginations forever.
Our Flag Means Death
Among the many cancellations slated for the 2023-2024 season, “Our Flag Means Death” stands out as one of the most unexpected. This series offered a captivating take on the adventures of historical pirates Steed Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby) and Edward Teach, alias Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). As the story unfolds, we witness the blossoming, albeit star-crossed romance between Steed and Ed. While Steed strives to maintain his gentlemanly demeanor as a pirate aboard the Revenge, he is accompanied by an eccentric band of sailors on this journey.
It was never explained why HBO decided to cancel “Our Flag Means Death”. This surprise move left critics puzzled, as even the series creator, David Jenkins, admitted that the final scene of Season 2, where Steed and Ed establish a home together on an island, wasn’t originally intended to be the finale. The show was initially planned to span over three seasons.
Enraged by those remarks, the audience of the show banded together, attempting to persuade HBO — and any other broadcaster with an available slot — to reconsider the action-dramedy for another opportunity. The #SaveOurFlagMeansDeath campaign collected funds to carry out several large-scale, eye-catching stunts, such as a billboard in Times Square and hiring a plane to fly over Los Angeles with a banner pleading for the show’s revival. As of press time, the campaign persists in its modest efforts, with fans determined to find a new platform for the series. With Jenkins maintaining hope, all possibilities seem within reach.
NCIS: Hawai’i
NCIS: Hawaii” stood out in the vast NCIS universe due to its unique characteristics. It was not only a hit with a wide audience but also gained a dedicated fanbase, largely thanks to its distinct cast that deviated from the norm of other shows in the franchise. Notably, it introduced the first female lead, Jane Tennant (played by Vanessa Lachey), and featured two main characters, Lucy Tara (Yasmine Al-Bustami) and Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson), who are both lesbians.
Audience members found themselves deeply invested in the love story between Kate and Lucy as well as Jane’s intricate past, and when Sam Hanna (played by LL Cool J) joined the cast, the chemistry seemed even stronger. Yet, fans were taken aback when CBS decided to end the series despite its consistent ratings, due to financial considerations compared to ratings and a wish for renewal on the network’s programming schedule.
As a passionate gamer and die-hard NCIS fan, I was pretty hyped when I heard about CBS introducing a prequel titled “NCIS: Origins,” starring Austin Stowell as a younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs. To be honest, the announcement left some “Hawai’i” enthusiasts feeling a bit sidelined, arguing that the network might have played favorites. They even threatened a boycott, and it looks like they’re sticking to their word – ratings for “NCIS: Origins” have been significantly lower compared to “NCIS: Hawai’i.
CSI: Vegas
In the past, countless individuals eagerly awaited each new episode of “CSI” or one of its offshoots every week. However, unexpectedly, “CSI: Vegas” has been added to the list of shows that have been terminated after three seasons. This is quite surprising, as this franchise used to be a mainstay on CBS during the 2000s and early 2010s. The situation becomes even more disheartening when you consider that CBS didn’t renew it due to scheduling conflicts.
In “CSI: Vegas,” the cast frequently changed, with many familiar faces from the original series working together in a crime lab based in Las Vegas. The first season primarily starred Sara Sidle (played by Jorja Fox) and Gil Grissom (William Petersen), while Marg Helgenberger’s character Catherine Willows took the lead for seasons 2 and 3. This spin-off show combined its signature blend of grisly crimes, dark humor from the field of pathology, and ample gore. It remains unclear if CBS will revive this franchise again or not, but there may be a chance for another reunion of these characters in the future.
The Acolyte
Despite garnering positive reviews from critics, reaching a high approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and initially being one of the most watched premieres on Disney+, it was still unexpected that “The Acolyte” was canceled after just its first season, given its strong “Star Wars” connection and the hype surrounding its launch. This could be due to factors such as fan reactions or production issues, but its quick demise on the platform remains somewhat of a surprise.
The series was all about twin padawans named Osha and Mae (both played by Amandla Stenberg), who are separated by a tragic fire in their youth. While Mae has disappeared, Osha has failed to become a Jedi due to her temper and has avoided the order ever since. Then Mae resurfaces as a killer, forcing Osha to act as Sol (Lee Jung-jae), an ex-Jedi Master, surfaces to investigate the crime. Also arriving on the scene is Quimir (Manny Jacinto), a mysterious man who may know more than he lets on about the twins’ pasts.
As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, I can’t help but feel that even the most overlooked aspects of our galaxy far, far away have this knack for resurfacing in future stories. It might take a journey through a few light-years, but who knows, maybe one day “The Acolyte” will find its rightful place and be admired anew.
Halo
The formula appeared to guarantee success: it revolved around the popular video game series “Halo,” boasting high-quality graphics that rivaled the in-game images. With shows like “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” gaining significant popularity, it seemed logical to develop a story based on Master Chief’s adventures. The strategy seemed effective, as viewers tuned in sufficiently for the show to get renewed. However, the Paramount+ adaptation of “Halo” lasted only two seasons before its cancellation, puzzling fans and leaving them surprised by its demise. There were rumors that the budget was the culprit; it seemed that the impressive visuals came with a high cost.
The series follows the character of Master Chief John-117 (played by Pablo Schreiber), a highly skilled soldier who is part of an elite group known as the Spartans. This team, along with all of humanity, are engaged in a fierce battle against an evil alien race to ensure the survival of their kind. Given that the producers have promised to continue exploring “Halo’s” universe, it seems likely that more intergalactic escapades await us.
That ’90s Show
Various classic sitcoms from the past have been revived with great success, such as “The Conners,” “Frasier,” and “Night Court.” Initially, it appeared that “That ’90s Show” might join their ranks, earning a renewal following its debut season. However, Netflix decided to end production of the sitcom after Season 2, which had low viewership figures on the streaming platform and received limited promotion.
New fans were taken aback and disappointed when there was no advertising for the show, as they had not given up hope that another network like Fox, famous for “That ’70s Show,” might take it on. Although some felt that “That ’90s Show” lacked a genuine ’90s vibe, they didn’t want it to be canceled. The cast appeared equally shocked by the situation, expressing their admiration for each other’s performances and offering words of encouragement on Kurtwood Smith’s Instagram.
The television series titled “That ’90s Show” unfolds in Point Place, 15 years after the conclusion of “That ’70s Show.” In 1995, Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) have a daughter named Leia (Callie Haverda). During her summers, Leia visits Grandpa Red (Smith) and Grandma Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp), forging new friendships and encountering her first significant heartaches, acts of rebellion, and romantic entanglements. Characters from “That ’70s Show,” such as Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis) and Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), also make appearances. Their son, Jay (Mace Coronel), develops feelings for Leia. The creator, Smith, has mentioned that the series will be pitched to networks – we’ll see if the passage of time turns out well for his group of teenagers.
Chucky
The acclaimed horror series “Chucky” garnered widespread appreciation from both its dedicated fanbase and the broader horror community. However, due to internal programming adjustments at SyFy, “Chucky” found itself in a precarious position. To make matters worse, the network delayed their decision on the show for months, creating uncertainty among the production team and fans who were fighting to preserve the series. The cancellation of the show after three seasons was therefore unexpected, given that it ranked among the top 10 original scripted dramas on cable when it was discontinued.
In this new chapter, the infamous doll named “Chucky” once again embodies the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, played by Brad Dourif, alongside his lover Tiffany Valentine portrayed by Jennifer Tilly. Chucky comes across a troubled teenager named Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), attempting to transform him into a murderer and seize control of his body. However, Jake receives unexpected assistance from Lexy Cross (Alyvia Alyn Lind) who initially mistreats him, as well as his crush Devon Evans (Björgvin Arnarson). A massive conflict erupts between Chucky’s adversaries and allies, with the only conceivable outcome being mutual destruction.
Fans of the series can rest assured they’ll get a resolution, as creator Don Mancini has promised another “Child’s Play” movie to wrap up the unresolved aspects from “Chucky.” In other words, it seems that the menace of the red-haired doll with a murderous streak will continue.
Dead Boy Detectives
2021 wasn’t kind to supernatural and fantasy TV shows; alongside “Our Flag Means Death” and “Kaos,” “Dead Boy Detectives” concluded its run on Netflix after only one season. Originating from a beloved series of DC comics by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the show boasted an established fanbase who eagerly supported it. Given its links to the acclaimed “Sandman” series and graphic novels, many believed “Dead Boy Detectives” was invulnerable to cancellation, but unfortunately, this wasn’t the case.
The story revolves around Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), two young men who cross paths as they journey toward the afterlife, choosing instead to join forces and combat crime on Earth. While Edwin is a detective when he accidentally winds up in the underworld, Charles meets an untimely death at the hands of his peers. Together with a medium named Kassius Nelson and her colleagues, they remain on this plane and combine their abilities to battle wrongdoing.
Although “Dead Boy Detectives” received satisfactory viewership, it seems it failed to meet the high standards Netflix is known for in terms of ratings. Nevertheless, its fans remain hopeful that it will find a new platform. Despite its positive critical reception and devoted cult following, it’s unlikely we’ll see this show making a comeback.
My Lady Jane
During the 2023-2024 season, it proved challenging to launch a fantasy series, as demonstrated by Prime Video’s “My Lady Jane.” This unique production blended the historical sorrow of Lady Jane Grey (played by Emily Bader) with a fantastical narrative about shape-shifting beings and the societal hierarchies they engender. The show amassed a devoted fanbase on TikTok, sparking outrage when it was canceled. Among those campaigning for a second season? None other than George R.R. Martin himself, who joined the public clamor via his blog.
The story unfolds around Jane, who finds herself in a political union with Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel). In the sequence of rulers, she stands behind King Edward VI (Jordan Peters). However, her world is turned upside down when she discovers that Dudley is an Ethian – a suppressed group of beings capable of transforming into animals. Unable to manage his transformation between human and equine forms, he seeks to gain control over it.
It is inappropriate for Ethicals and ordinary humans to interact, and should Dudley’s secret be discovered, it would result in a death sentence. Regrettably, the main characters face opposition not only from humans but also Ethical forces who aim to regain the throne. Whether we will eventually learn the outcome for Jane and Dudley remains to be seen.
