‘The Notebook’ Sets Closing Date For Broadway Run

As a long-time fan of Nicholas Sparks’ heartwarming tales, I must admit that I was eagerly anticipating the Broadway adaptation of “The Notebook.” Having grown up with the movie and reading the book multiple times, I had high expectations for this musical.

The musical adaptation of The Notebook will play its final Broadway performance on Dec. 15.

The Ingrid Michaelson-scored and Bekah Brunstetter (of ‘This Is Us’) penned musical made its Broadway debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 14, 2024, following a premiere at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. This production will kick off a nationwide tour starting in September 2025, beginning with performances at Playhouse Square in Cleveland, Ohio.

The play is helmed by directors Michael Greif, known for “Dear Evan Hansen”, and Schele Williams, recognized for “The Wiz”, and features choreography by Katie Spelman. This production is adapted from a novel by Nicholas Sparks, which was also turned into a movie, and presents three sets of actors portraying the romantic tale of Allie and Noah spanning different time periods.

Although the stage adaptation shares a popular name with an established work, it hasn’t achieved blockbuster success on Broadway. The musical garnered mixed feedback from critics and earned nominations for Best Book, as well as Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett in their roles as older Noah and Allie, but unfortunately, it didn’t win the Tony Award. Additionally, it was not nominated for Best Musical or its score. However, one of its songs, “My Days,” has gained significant popularity independently, surpassing 4 million streams.

The film made its peak earnings during the week ending March 31, totaling $946,124.50, however, it has been earning less since then, with a recent intake of $530,381.50 during the week ending Aug. 25.

When it shut down, the play had a total of 35 preview shows and 317 regular performances under its belt at the Schoenfeld Theatre.

Beyond Plunkett and Harewood, the ensemble includes Joy Woods portraying Middle Allie, Ryan Vasquez taking on the role of Middle Noah, Jordan Tyson as Younger Allie, John Cardoza as Younger Noah, AndréaBurns for Mother/Nurse Lori, and Carson Stewart acting as Johnny/Fin.
