As a movie lover who has spent countless hours binge-watching The Office and laughing at Michael Scott‘s antics, it’s fascinating to learn about the alternate universe where the show might have been led by other actors. It’s hard to imagine anyone but Steve Carell embodying the role so perfectly, but names like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, and Bob Odenkirk certainly pique my curiosity.
He goes by many names: Michael Scott, Michael Scarn, Michael the Magic, Date Mike, Prison Mike, and even Blind Guy McSqueezy (some of the jokes have become a bit dated), but ‘s lovable idiot from The Office almost had many other faces, as the show’s casting director was eyeing several Oscar-caliber actors for the part. It’s hard to imagine the US version of The Office without Steve Carell’s Michael Scott – NBC tried to for the final two seasons and it didn’t work. It’s almost guaranteed that the show wouldn’t have become the sitcom monolith it’s now known as without him. But, in an alternate universe, The Office would have been led by some other insanely talented and insanely different actors.
No Thanks, Keep Reading
In the recent installment of Office Ladies, hosted by its stars Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela), casting director Allison Jones disclosed that show creator Greg Daniels had a long list of potential leading actors, some of whom were big-name celebrities. She recalled, “I can still recall the first meeting we had with the network when [Greg Daniels] presented his list of candidates.” It’s no secret to longtime fans that Bob Odenkirk from Better Call Saul initially tried out for the role, but Jones revealed some additional, impressive names. She added:
They said something like, “How about Philip Seymour Hoffman? Or perhaps we should consider Paul Giamatti instead?
Allison Jones didn’t give a specific reason for not being chosen for the show, but she did mention that many actors were hesitant about joining due to the industry’s view of comedy during that time period. Not only was The Office a television series, which wasn’t always respected by high-profile film stars, but it was also a comedy, placing it lower on the arts pecking order (with interpretive dance being considered the pinnacle). She stated, “no one did TV; comedy was the bottom of the barrel.
NBC Always Wanted Steve Carell for The Office
According to Allison Jones, NBC had consistently favored Steve Carell for the role over several other actors, as stated by Nancy Perkins, who was NBC Universal’s head of casting. Jones added that Perkins always believed Steve would be an excellent fit for the part. However, Carell was already tied up with other obligations, specifically a failed series called “Come to Papa.” Consequently, the network had to explore other options in the interim.
Allison Jones playfully noted, “Celebrities graced our humble sofa. It was a petite, not-so-fancy couch, if you will.” Alongside Bob Odenkirk and Paul Giamatti, Jones also reminisced about Patton Oswalt trying out for the role on their “unimpressive little couch.” Despite numerous actors attending auditions, they all presented subpar renditions of the character that eventually transformed into Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. She went on to say…
“We gathered exceptional talents, each embodying their unique take on the character of Michael Scott. Patton Oswalt and Bob Odenkirk were among those who could’ve excelled in the role.
