The Office Pilot Director Shares His Experience Directing New Spinoff, The Paper

In an exclusive report from ScreenRant, it’s been announced that two original directors from the first season of “The Office” will helm the first two episodes of the upcoming spinoff series titled “The Paper“. This eagerly awaited show is set to debut on Peacock on September 18, 2025, and features stars like Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, among others. Interestingly, Oscar Nuńez, who played the character of Oscar Martinez in “The Office”, will reappear in “The Paper“. It’s important to note that unlike “The Office”, which was initially developed by Ricky Gervais for the BBC, “The Paper” is not a remake but rather takes place within the same narrative universe.

In a chat with Ash Crosson from ScreenRant, Ken Kwapis, a two-time Emmy nominee known for his work on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, discussed his role in The Paper’s first season. He also disclosed that Greg Daniels, who directed 13 episodes of The Office and developed the American television version, will be back to direct an initial episode of The Paper. Notably, Kwapis, who has previously directed episodes for Netflix’s Space Force with Steve Carell and the series Santa Clarita Diet, was responsible for directing 13 episodes of The Office, including its pilot.

ScreenRant: For a brief moment, I’d like to bring attention to some of your other remarkable pieces that I admire deeply. Among them is the pilot episode for The Office, which was 20 years ago now. A spin-off titled The Paper is in development. Could you share your thoughts on witnessing the story’s ongoing journey?

Ken Kwapis: Well, I participated in the new show. I directed one episode of The Paper.

I won’t reveal too much, but let me share a few details. Greg Daniels directed the premiere of the latest series, while I took charge of episode 2. It was truly enjoyable working with Greg again and revisiting our initial ideas for The Office, as we adapted them to this new theme. Trust me, you’ll be excited to see it once it airs.

What Ken Kwapis’ Involvement Means For The Paper

The Paper Should Emulate The Office In Style & Tone

As a dedicated fan, I find it incredibly encouraging to know that Kwapis will be helming the second episode of The Paper. This choice suggests that the early episodes of The Paper will effectively recreate the original ambiance and humor of The Office, thereby forging a strong and recognizable bond between the two shows. Notably, Daniels’ return to direct the pilot is simply fantastic news! While it was previously announced that Daniels would collaborate with Michael Koman on developing The Paper, the confirmation that he will also direct at least one episode adds an extra layer of promise to this spinoff.

In a refreshing twist, Kwapis and Daniels are expected to revive some classic traits from “The Office,” while also introducing fresh elements in the upcoming series titled “The Paper.” The “fun” that Kwapis mentions hints at an atmosphere free from the burden of trying to match the immediate success of “The Office“. With appropriate direction, “The Paper” shows promise for a long-running series, much like their earlier involvement in seasons of “The Office.” Fingers crossed that they will continue to direct more episodes of “The Paper” should everything proceed as planned.
