The Office, one of the most celebrated TV shows ever produced, has left an indelible mark on television history. Spanning nine seasons, it catapulted actors such as Steve Carell and John Krasinski into stardom and revolutionized the mockumentary format in sitcoms. In 2020 alone, viewers tuned in for a staggering 57.1 billion minutes, a record that was eventually surpassed by Suits three years later.
As a dedicated fan, I wasn’t at all taken aback when it was revealed that the streaming platform where my favorite shows dwell, Peacock, had greenlit a sequel to the iconic sitcom, The Office. Excitedly, I learned that the new show, dubbed The Paper, won’t be a strict continuation of the Dunder Mifflin paper-selling offices, instead introducing fresh characters to the mix. However, with some beloved characters from The Office making a comeback and The Paper promising to keep the laughs coming in the same vein that made the original series so unforgettable, I’m more than ready to embrace this exciting new chapter!
‘The Paper’ Won’t Have the Same Premise as ‘The Office’
The Paper, unlike The Office, centers around the daily lives of employees at a struggling, yet historic Midwestern newspaper called the Toledo Truth-Teller. In an effort to stay afloat, the publication has adopted an unconventional strategy: recruiting volunteer reporters.
As a dedicated cinephile, let me share my perspective: In contrast to the Scranton, Pennsylvania backdrop of The Office, The Paper is nestled in a Midwestern location, one state apart. This shift in setting promises an expansive canvas for the storyline, potentially outstripping the diverse locales portrayed in The Office. With a majority of the characters donning the mantle of reporters, we can anticipate a multitude of settings gracing our screens. Expect to see these journalists delving into local politics, conversing with unforeseeable citizens, and much more, as they bring the stories unfolding before us to light.
Even though there are differences, the new show, The Paper, is expected to maintain the same humor and appeal as The Office. This is because the original series’ producers, Greg Daniels, Ricky Gervais, and Stephen Merchant, are all involved in producing The Paper. In fact, Greg Daniels has previously worked on a series set in the Midwest, where he served as a producer and creator for Parks and Recreation. Furthermore, The Paper will be filmed in the same mockumentary style as The Office, potentially linking the two shows through the same documentary team.
The Cast Has Domhnall Gleeson Among Comedians
And Oscar Is Returning!
In “The Paper”, there’s a substantial ensemble featuring several rising talents. Heading this cast is Domhnall Gleeson, recognized from the Star Wars series, who takes on the character of a freshly hired employee at the Toledo Truth-Teller. Sabrina Impacciatore, famed for her portrayal of Valentina in Season 2 of The White Lotus, will assume the role of managing editor. Her character might bear some resemblance to Michael Scott’s position.
The actor Melvin Gregg, known for his role in the Netflix series “American Vandal,” joins forces with Chelsea Frei (from “Poker Face”) and Ramona Young (from “Santa Clarita Diet”). It’s expected that these three talented individuals will portray reporters within the show. As an NBC Insider article reveals, they spent time observing real journalists at the Palisadian-Post, a nearly century-old newspaper in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, to gather insights and prepare for their roles as newsworthy figures.
In The Paper, performers such as Mo Welch, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, and Eric Rahill will take on dual roles, contributing to the show’s script while also portraying characters within it. The main cast is rounded out by Molly Ephraim, Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Tim Key, Nancy Lenehan, Tracy Letts, and Duane Shepard Sr.
In the original version of The Office, it’s only been confirmed that Oscar Nuñez will reprise his role as Oscar Martinez. A potential storyline might involve the newspaper needing paper supplies from Dunder Mifflin. Other cast members, such as Rainn Wilson and John Krasinski, have expressed interest in returning as Dwight Schrute and Jim Halpert if the show’s creator, Greg Daniels, invites them back.

When and Where To Stream ‘The Paper’
As a diehard movie enthusiast, I’ve got some exciting news to share! Unlike its previous run, “The Paper” won’t be gracing our TV screens on NBC this time around. Instead, it’s making a leap straight onto NBC’s streaming platform, Peacock. Now, they’ve set a release window for September 2025! In this upcoming trailer, it seems our documentary crew will be visiting the Toledo Truth-Teller’s offices. Guess who shows up? None other than Oscar himself, who, from the looks of things, isn’t too thrilled to see his old office crew again. Can’t wait to find out more!
The actors involved in the show have confirmed that filming concluded last year, and since they’re currently in post-production, it’s expected that this timeline will hold true for now. At present, fans of The Paper only have a photo released by Peacock to look at, but as we approach its debut, further details should be disclosed over the upcoming months.
