As a fan who has grown up watching “The Pink Panther” and marveling at the sheer brilliance of Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, it is both heartening and humbling to know that two of the film’s original cast members are still with us today. Claudia Cardinale and Robert Wagner have not only left an indelible mark on the silver screen but also continue to inspire through their passion for women’s rights and their resilience in the face of adversity.
Initially, “The Pink Panther” wasn’t intended to create such a significant cultural footprint; it was primarily conceived as a light-hearted comedy featuring a thief at a ski resort in the Alps. However, it surpassed all expectations and became much more than expected, largely due to Peter Sellers’ unforgettable portrayal of Inspector Clouseau and Henry Mancini’s iconic music score.
In the film “The Pink Panther,” it was not intended for Clouseau or Sellers to be the main attraction; instead, David Niven held that position, evident in the movie poster where his name stands out prominently at the top. The true protagonist of the first film was actually Niven’s character, Sir Charles Lytton, the sophisticated thief. However, Peter Sellers’ remarkable and comical performance made Clouseau a standout, eventually turning him into the central focus of the Pink Panther franchise. To this day, the original movie is often cited as one of Sellers’ finest works. Regrettably, neither Sellers nor Niven are alive anymore, along with many other actors from the original Pink Panther cast.
Only two members of the original cast from “The Pink Panther” remain, continuing the film’s iconic legacy that sparked countless animated openings. Notably, Capucine, Colin Gordon, John Le Mesurier, and Brenda de Banzie are no longer with us. These actors are the ones who survived among the original stars of “The Pink Panther.”
Claudia Cardinale (Princess Dala)
In a different wording: Claudia Cardinale portrayed Princess Dala, the namesake diamond’s proprietor, in “The Pink Panther.” As a character from the fictional kingdom of Lugash, Dala found herself pursued by Sir Charles Lytton, and she had quite a task on her hands trying to prevent the diamond from falling into different sets of hands. Among those seeking the gem were the new leaders of her own country who demanded its return.
Before achieving fame in Hollywood, Cardinale had already established herself in Italian and French cinematography with notable roles in “The Leopard,” “Rocco and His Brothers,” and “Girl with a Suitcase.” Her debut in Hollywood came with “The Pink Panther” during the 1960s, where she played Jill McBain in the iconic spaghetti western “Once Upon a Time in the West.” Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, Cardinale continued working extensively, although she leaned more towards European films, opting not to fully embrace Hollywood stardom.
Beyond her work in the entertainment industry, Cardinale has been a devoted activist for women’s rights worldwide, earning the title of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 2000. In a 2001 speech at UNESCO Headquarters, she declared, “I will be vigilant and unyielding in addressing women’s needs and championing their causes.” To this day, she continues to be admired both on and off the screen, regularly taking on new roles. She was featured in the 2020 Netflix film “Rogue City” and various projects throughout 2022.
Robert Wagner (George)
Amongst the principal actors from the “Pink Panther” series, it is Robert Wagner who remains alive, portraying Sir Charles Lytton’s nephew named George. A chronic gambler burdened with mounting bills, George endeavors to emulate his uncle’s criminal activities in an attempt to swipe the Pink Panther diamond, but achieves little success.
Wagner’s career gained significant momentum post “The Pink Panther”, particularly in the subsequent years. He landed roles in blockbuster films such as “The Towering Inferno”, and starred in numerous television series from the late ’60s to the mid ’80s. These TV shows encompassed “It Takes a Thief”, “Switch”, and a five-year stint on the ’80s mystery series “Hart to Hart”. Later, he appeared as a recurring character in shows like “Two and a Half Men” and “NCIS”.
Nowadays, Wagner is often discussed for his suspected role in the tragic drowning death of actress Natalie Wood, who was his wife at the time and they were in their second marriage. During a yacht voyage with Wagner, Wood, and a few other prominent individuals, including Christopher Walken, her body was discovered drowned. Bruises on her body sparked questions about her demise, and later reports revealed an argument between Wagner and Wood during the trip. As of 2022, the case remains unsolved.
