As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of the Batman universe, I must admit that the announcement of ‘The Penguin‘ series has left me both intrigued and slightly apprehensive. While I’ve always enjoyed the gritty, ground-level perspective that characters like The Penguin offer, I can’t help but miss the towering presence of Batman in Gotham.
Although audiences are eager for Colin Farrell to return as the wicked character Oswald Cobblepot in “The Penguin”, it’s important to note that the appearance of Robert Pattinson as Batman is not planned for this production.
The television show from HBO is based on the 2022 film titled “The Batman,” but instead of focusing on the main storyline, it revolves around the character played by Farrell as he attempts to take control of the criminal underworld in Gotham.
“Lauren LeFranc, showrunner, stated to SFX magazine that it’s reasonable for people to prefer having Batman in a series or movie because they believe it lacks impact otherwise. In contrast, she feels that Matt’s films offer a unique intensity due to the Batman’s perspective – viewing the city from above. With Oz, however, you are immersed in the city streets, experiencing the dirt, grime, and struggle, as the character yearns to rise above it all.”
LeFranc additionally characterized “The Penguin” as a unique adventure, stating, “In my opinion, Gotham is intriguing enough to warrant exploring further, allowing us to unlock more of its secrets and discover our own interpretations.”
In the new series, Reeves, who holds the position of executive producer, sought to reassure fans, expressing that he doesn’t sense any “essential element” seems to be lacking.
“The filmmaker explained that the new movie seems to build upon the existing foundations of Batman’s world. He said, ‘You can think of it as a different path, but you’ll still see the shadows of Batman, The Riddler, and events from the last film.’ These elements linger and influence the storyline, serving as our starting point.”
The movie titled “The Penguin” is scheduled for release on HBO and Max on September 19th. Meanwhile, Reeves is busy working on the sequel to “The Batman,” which is expected to hit the screens in 2026.
