As a film enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the dark alleys of Gotham City and its colorful cast of characters, I must say that The Penguin’s seventh episode was a rollercoaster ride of unexpected twists and turns. Clancy Brown’s portrayal of Sal Maroni was nothing short of brilliant, and his untimely demise due to a heart attack during an all-out brawl left me both surprised and saddened.
In episode 7 of “The Penguin,” Gotham’s criminal landscape undergoes significant changes, with the demise of a renowned DC Comics antagonist, Salvatore Maroni, played by Clancy Brown. However, unlike in previous episodes, Oswald Cobblepot (the Penguin) does not deliver the fatal blow. Instead, events unfold in such a way that Oz Cobb, portrayed by Colin Farrell, takes the lives of several key members of the Maroni family, which leads to an unexpected alliance between rival crime organizations seeking revenge. Despite their combined efforts, Oz manages to maintain his dominance over Gotham City by the end of the day in a most unforeseen manner.
This week’s edition of “The Penguin” showcases Sal Maroni forming an alliance with the recently established Gigante family, led by Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti). The story begins with Sofia abducting Oz’s mother and leaving Vic unconscious at the Crown Point apartment. This compels Oz to surrender to Sal, who intends to eliminate him immediately, but Sofia requires her ex-chauffeur alive for some reason. In the ensuing events, as Oz accompanies Sal to an illegal drug operation, the Penguin surprises Sal by narrating the horrific incident of his wife and son being burned alive, a memory that still lingers with the smell. A violent conflict erupts between the factions, culminating in a one-on-one fistfight between Oz and Sal to settle their differences. Eventually, despite having an advantageous position, Sal unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack and falls backward.
Despite Oz appearing to emerge victorious from the fight, it’s important to note that he didn’t actually defeat Sal Maroni, masterfully portrayed by Clancy Brown. Although he now faces challenges with Sofia and reuniting his mother, the Penguin is left unsatisfied, typical of any villain, in not getting rid of his rival as planned. Furthermore, it seems his drug operation is no longer viable following its destructive climax at the episode’s end. Oz may have come out on top once more, but episode 7 ensured a bittersweet ending that left viewers with mixed feelings.
The Penguin Finale is Nearly Here
The final episode of “The Penguin” series is due next Sunday, and it looks like it’s going to be quite an exciting one. In the preceding episodes, Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) was running his own drug business with Vic (Rhenzy Feliz) by his side, but he has now been kidnapped by Sofia’s henchmen. He requests that Vic gather a large group of people, which could mean he intends to enlist the help of the gangs he addressed passionately in episode 6. Yet, it remains uncertain whether they will be willing to assist him given that his drug operation has been dismantled. Whether Oz can come out on top yet again is questionable, as the odds are significantly against him this time.
Given that episode 8 of The Penguin leaves many questions unanswered, there’s a possibility that a second season could pick up where Oz’s storyline is left off (assuming he makes it through the finale). Matt Reeves has hinted at discussions with HBO regarding a potential second season of The Penguin, along with other spinoff series based on The Batman. While it’s expected that Oz will feature in The Batman: Part II, the eagerly awaited sequel isn’t set to release until late 2026. Since The Penguin seems to be a direct prequel to the upcoming Batman sequel, viewers might have to wait another two years for Season 2. Fingers crossed that characters from the HBO series like Oz will appear in The Batman: Part II.
