As a seasoned gamer who has navigated through countless virtual worlds and DC universes, I must say that the finale of The Penguin has left me intrigued and eager for more. The subtle hints towards future stories, particularly the possible introduction of The Court of Owls in The Batman: Part 2, have my detective senses tingling with anticipation.
Of course, this tale delves into plot twists from the final episode of “The Penguin,” so if you haven’t watched it yet, it would be wise to halt your reading here.
The majority of the final episode of the outstanding HBO series “The Penguin” revolved around Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) addressing the consequences of his impulsive act to kill Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), a decision made in Episode 1 of this captivating crime drama. Throughout the season, Oz has encountered Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), the Maroni crime family, a young protégé named Victor (Rhenzy Feliz), and his own mother (Deirdre O’Connell). However, a particular scene in the finale hints at where Matt Reeves might steer this narrative when he continues the storyline in “The Batman: Part 2“.
Regarding the acclaim for “The Penguin”, it’s worth noting that this series wasn’t dominated by previews of upcoming DC films. On the contrary, showrunner Lauren LeFranc meticulously crafted her soap opera narrative, carefully developing a gritty corner of Gotham and expanding on key characters who could potentially play pivotal roles in future stories… or disappear without a trace. The audience certainly took notice when Sofia, now in Arkham, received a letter from her half-sister Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz). It’s safe to assume that this plotline will be further explored by Matt Reeves and his team in “The Batman: Part 2”.
However, one particular scene from the finale caught my attention as a potential setup for Oz’s appearance in The Batman: Part 2. It seemed almost as if director Matt Reeves intentionally included this sequence to pave the way for a narrative he might develop in future installments.
Into the Lion’s Den
Throughout the climax, Oz (Colin Farrell) encounters several challenging predicaments. Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) manages to corner the quick-witted rat on multiple occasions, even involving his mother (Deirdre O’Connell) and the crime family leaders at times. However, before the main storyline continues, there’s an unexpected interlude: Victor (Rhenzy Feliz) guides Oz to City Hall, allowing him to gain support and boost his influence among other powerful figures.
Within City Hall, Oz encounters Councilman Sebastian Hady (played by Rhys Coiro), whom he had bribed earlier in an attempt to restore power in his damaged neighborhood of Crown Point. During their conversation, Oz cleverly rearranges the pieces of his recent criminal activities, shifting the blame onto others. He accuses the late Salvatore Maroni (portrayed by Clancy Brown) for the underground Bliss operation in Crown Point. He points the finger at Sofia for detonating the tunnels beneath Crown Point (an action she indeed performed). In explaining this to Hady, Oz says:
Counselor, here’s your chance to offer the public someone they can both detest and adore. I’m talking about Sebastian Hady, the man who brought light back to Crown Point, restored people’s self-worth, put away the last Falcone, and effectively ended a longstanding drug war that has tormented our city streets for years. This is the kind of victory that can catapult you to great heights, councilman.
In the DC Comics universe, Sebastian Hady eventually takes on the role of Mayor of Gotham City. Despite his corrupt nature, he holds significant power within the city. It’s beneficial to have such a powerful ally in Gotham. As we are aware, Oz doesn’t provide services without compensation. When asked about his demands from Hady, the crook simply states:
It would be nice to find a sense of belonging here for once, perhaps I’ll encounter some familiar faces. Who knows, maybe someday we’ll cross paths with Bella Real.
Who are these “friends” Oz is referencing? I think I know… and I think the scene tells us.
The Court of Owls
Fans have enjoyed brainstorming potential villains that director Matt Reeves could include in “The Batman: Part 2”. To be honest, we’ve done some speculating ourselves. So far, Reeves has introduced characters like The Riddler (Paul Dano), The Penguin (Farrell), Joker (Barry Keoghan), Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), and lesser threats. It appears that he is focusing on realistic criminals who deviate from the stereotypical comic book-style villains.
As a die-hard gamer, I’ve always been captivated by the idea that Matt Reeves could incorporate The Court of Owls into his Batman universe. This clandestine group, with centuries of influence over Gotham City’s elite, seems like it was tailor-made for the dark and intricate world that Reeves is crafting.
Some spectators have also noted an interesting similarity – the courtroom curtains resemble the silhouette of owls when viewed a certain way, and it’s quite striking how accurate that observation seems!
Is this a subtle nod or merely an aesthetic choice? Time will tell by October 2026 when The Batman: Part 2 is slated for release. I ponder if we’ll see another season of The Penguin, or if Reeves might instead support a spinoff featuring another notable character. Whichever it is, all I ask is that we spend more time in this Gotham before Pattinson steps back up to fight crime again.
