In the Iceberg Lounge, Selena Kyle tried to access the hidden section “44 Below,” but Oz intervened, expressing concern for her safety. This interaction, Reeves noted, showcased a softer side of Oz that he would never exhibit around Batman. Similar to his bond with his mother, Reeves explained, Oz’s protective feelings towards Sofia stemmed from a distorted affection. When Oz offered Selena money not to venture there and she refused, his demeanor changed abruptly, becoming confrontational. This altercation, as described by Matt Reeves, triggered the development of the spin-off series featuring The Penguin.
In certain Batman comics, The Penguin holds a caring bond towards his mother, but this aspect isn’t often delved into as deeply as it is in ‘The Penguin’. Following the scene, Reeves granted Lauren LeFranc creative liberty to expand upon that central idea. He stated:
When Lauren arrived, I displayed the particular scene for her. We engaged in a discussion about the origins of all this harmful masculinity.
In a more simplified and conversational style: Deep inside, some people have vulnerabilities or weaknesses they overcompensate for, shielding their emotional scars so fiercely that they can seem intimidating. It was up to Lauren to uncover this tale, and she found it in the character of Francis, portrayed by Deirdre O’Connell.
Oz Cobb Will Return in The Batman Part 2 & 3
It appears that Oz Cobb, played by Colin Farrell, has a substantial and likely harmful tenure within the world of Reeves’ “The Batman” franchise, as he has committed to a three-film contract for his role. With the upcoming sequel, “The Batman: Part II,” about to commence filming and Oz Cobb expected to endure the story, it is presumed he will reappear in the concluding chapter of the trilogy.
