The Penguin Has a Higher Rotten Tomatoes Score Than The Batman

As a longtime fan of Batman and his dark, gritty universe, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming Max streaming series, The Penguin. Having followed the development of this series since its inception, it’s truly remarkable to see how Matt Reeves and his team have managed to create something even more critically acclaimed than The Batman itself.

The feedback on “The Penguin” has been overwhelmingly favorable, with many praising it as a standout in Matt Reeves’ Dark Knight universe, which started with last year’s “The Batman.” Notably, both the movie and this new Max streaming series have received acclaim from critics, but interestingly, the TV show seems to be garnering even better reviews than Reeves’ film, based on Rotten Tomatoes scores.

Currently, The Penguin is doing exceptionally well with a new score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, outperforming The Batman’s current score of 85%. Although it’s unlikely that The Penguin will accumulate as many reviews as The Batman (which has 529 reviews), this achievement is still noteworthy given the anticipation surrounding the series. The public’s reaction to the show remains undetermined since it hasn’t been released yet, but The Batman currently boasts an audience rating of 87% on the site.

The television show known as “The Penguin” is a spin-off from “The Batman,” delving deeper into the character of Colin Farrell’s Penguin, who had a less prominent role in the 2022 film. Work on this series started in 2021, as Matt Reeves sought to explore the character more extensively than he could within the confines of the movie, considering its large ensemble cast and other narratives that required greater focus. Lauren LeFranc was enlisted to pen the series, with Matt Reeves and “The Batman” producer Dylan Clark taking on executive producer roles.

Another spin-off series titled “Gotham City Police Department” (GCPD) was initially being developed, but its progress was paused as production efforts were channeled more towards a series centered around “The Penguin,” which was further along in development. Craig Zobel, famed for “The Hunt” and “Mare of Easttown,” was enlisted to direct the first three episodes of this series, while Helen Shaver, an experienced TV director whose recent works include “Station Eleven” and “Vikings,” is overseeing additional installments. It was later disclosed that the show will comprise eight episodes, all set to debut exclusively on the Max streaming platform.

Following the happenings in “The Batman”, the storyline of “The Penguin” will follow the ascension of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/The Penguin to power within Gotham City. With the demise of crime boss Carmine Falcone, a vacancy for leadership in Gotham’s criminal underworld has arisen. This series is also rumored to pave the way for events that will lead into “The Batman – Part II”, as director Matt Reeves and his team are set to commence production on the sequel at the start of the new year. Alongside Farrell, this series features Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Mark Strong, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Theo Rossi, and Clancy Brown in notable roles.

The Penguin
hits the Max streaming service on Sep. 19.
