The Penguin Might Get A Dark Version Of Batman's Robin - And It Could Ruin Him

As a lifelong Batman fan who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and watching animated adaptations, I can’t help but see the intriguing parallels between Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) and his protege, Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz), in HBO’s “The Penguin.” The way their partnership began, with a chance encounter reminiscent of Batman and Jason Todd, has me wondering if we might be witnessing the making of a new Robin gone bad.

In Episode 1 of HBO’s “The Penguin,” I find myself immersed in a gritty tale of criminal reign, with the Dark Knight nowhere to be seen. However, traces of Batman’s legacy seem to permeate this chapter of Oswald Cobblepot’s (Colin Farrell) ascension, particularly his new protégé, Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz). It’s still early days, but the way their relationship is shaping up has me wondering if Victor might be following in the footsteps of a former Robin, potentially ending up on the wrong side.

Following his act of eliminating Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), Oz’s attempts to conceal his actions lead to him becoming a victim of a crime himself. As he transported the body to his car, Oz coincidentally ran into Victor just as he was tampering with the wheels of his own vehicle. Remarkably, this unexpected encounter bears resemblance to the one that occurred between Batman and Jason Todd, who became the second Robin after Dick Grayson in Batman #408 and later developed a reputation as one of DC Comics’ most despised characters.

Couldn’t it be a deliberate wink towards Todd’s backstory? Mightn’t the crucial segments of his Robin saga foreshadow a grim future for Oz and Vic?

Could Vic turn on Oz like Robin turned on Batman?

Although they currently appear friendly (largely due to Vic’s fear for his life), it’s been seven weeks since The Penguin initiated his plot to seize control of Gotham. We can only speculate about how many more lives will be at risk, how alliances might shift, and if Victor could find himself turning against those around him, much like the Red Hood does with his foes.

Fans of Batman are familiar with the fact that Jason Todd’s tenure as Robin ended abruptly in “A Death in the Family.” This storyline culminated in the Joker killing the Boy Wonder, leaving Batman without a partner for a while. However, fifteen years later, Jason reappeared to seek retribution against the Joker and the hero who had been unable to save him.

As a gamer immersed in this captivating narrative, I can’t help but speculate that Oz and Vic might be embarking on parallel journeys. It seems like Vic, betrayed by his supposed mentor, finds himself alone in the city as The Penguin spreads his influence. This tale, brimming with deceit and vengeance, echoes one of Batman’s most legendary stories, embodying the essence of classic crime sagas. Power is a fragile thing, easy to grasp but difficult to maintain. I can’t help but ponder if Vic will be the one to snatch power from Oz as The Penguin’s reign continues to expand.
