As a die-hard fan of both The Batman and HBO’s The Penguin, I must say that the recent developments have left me both excited and slightly disappointed. On one hand, it’s thrilling to know that The Penguin will continue to grace our screens in a potential Season 2, promising more tantalizing performances from Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. On the other hand, the lack of Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the series finale was a bit of a letdown, especially after the initial rumors hinting at a cameo.
Contrary to widespread spectator assumptions, the finale of “The Penguin” did not involve Robert Pattinson appearing as Batman. Although it had been confirmed that he wouldn’t make a cameo, this didn’t prevent viewers from anticipating a surprise appearance by the beloved Dark Knight, who was expected to intervene and stop Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) from seizing control of the criminal underworld. Interestingly, the mastermind behind the successful franchise initially conceived an abandoned plan for “The Penguin” that included a unique scene featuring Batman interacting with a regular cast member.
Matt Reeves, director of “The Batman,” discussed potential crossovers with HBO during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Preliminary discussions were held about including a Batman cameo in The Penguin, but this concept never progressed beyond initial creative team talks. No scenes featuring the superhero were written up. However, Reeves did share an early idea that was popular among them: they thought about having Robert Pattinson’s Batman encounter Victor (played by Rhenzy Feliz), a beloved character and partner in crime to The Penguin. Regrettably, this concept didn’t advance far in the production stages.
Throughout the process of creating this season’s storyline, we frequently debated if any plot points could naturally link together in a satisfying way. We experimented with several concepts, although none were fully developed or written down, as they didn’t quite resonate or feel organic to the narrative arc.
In The Penguin series, Batman’s presence was subtly hinted through the lighting of his Bat signal when Oz Cobb declared victory. Although the ending was grim and the next installment won’t hit theaters until 2026, it appears that Batman will eventually confront the Penguin at some point. Fans might have to wait a while for justice to be served on the Penguin for his many crimes throughout the show, particularly during the finale. Still, it’s evident that The Penguin is worth watching in the future, even without the main superhero character making an appearance.
The Future of The Batman & The Penguin is Promising
Despite initially being planned as a limited series, discussions for Season 2 of “The Penguin” are already underway between Reeves and HBO. This highly-praised show is expected to receive recognition when awards season arrives, as it significantly alters the characters’ starting positions. It’s been hinted that the ending will seamlessly transition into “The Batman: Part II,” with Oz Cobb appearing in approximately six or five scenes. Regrettably, this suggests that a potential Season 2 of “The Penguin” might not air until after the release of “The Batman” sequel in cinemas.
In “The Penguin”, Colin Farrell delivers astonishing portrayals as Oz and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone. It’s likely that these characters will reappear at some stage, and it might be more suitable to bring them back in Season 2 rather than on the big screen alongside the Caped Crusader. Given Sofia’s intriguing bond with Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), also known as Catwoman, her storyline deserves its own spotlight on a television series instead of a minor role in “The Batman: Part II”. However, it’s important for Reeves and the team to be cautious when planning a new season, as too much of a good thing could potentially become overwhelming.
