The Penguin Production Designer Says Oz Has Bad Taste

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for delving deep into the intricacies of storytelling and production design, I must say that “The Penguin” has certainly piqued my interest. The first episode, which premiered on HBO recently, presents an intriguing portrayal of Oz Cobb’s life in the gritty underbelly of Gotham City.

The first installment of HBO’s show titled “The Penguin” has officially aired, bringing joy to fans as they delve into the independent narrative of Oz Cobb, portrayed by Colin Farrell. Introduced in this episode is a new character from the Falcone crime family, Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti. The first episode offers viewers a sneak peek into Oz Cobb’s residence in the lower part of Gotham, and it’s clear that his interior design skills are not award-winning. Situated in the Diamond District of Gotham, Cobb’s apartment is decorated with garish furnishings, and his bedroom serves as a diamond safe. However, every element of ostentatiousness in the series was carefully planned by the creative team responsible for its production.

In an exclusive chat with MovieWeb, production designer Kalina Ivanov revealed insights into Oz Cobb’s garish living space and discussed the creative decisions and inspirations behind its design. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc described the place as a reflection of Oz’s poor taste, according to Ivanov. The series, “The Penguin,” tracks Oz’s ascension within Gotham City’s criminal underworld, attempting to fill the void left by the demise of Carmine Falcone. Ivanov explained that Cobb’s questionable taste stemmed from his longing to project an air of status and mimic his previous boss, Carmine. However, at this point in the story, The Penguin lacks the resources and know-how to achieve such a facade. She further elaborated:

“He aspires to be like Carmine, but lacks both the sense of style and the knowledge to achieve that.”

Oz Cobb’s Apartment Reflects His Status as The Penguin

In Matt Reeves’ intensely gritty and brutally violent universe depicted in “The Batman”, The Penguin delves into a fresh facet of Gotham City. Similar to how Reeves reimagined The Riddler (played by Paul Dano) in “The Batman”, Lauren LeFranc is revamping The Penguin, distancing him from his caricatured origins in the early comics and making him seem authentic and down-to-earth.

Although LeFranc and Colin Farrell were firm on not portraying Oz Cobb like a penguin (contrasting Danny DeVito’s character in Batman Returns), certain aspects of his comic book background were incorporated into the film’s set design. Kalina Ivanov reminisced about a discussion with Farrell regarding Cobb’s apartment, and the plan to place his bedroom within a vault. Ivanov proposed this idea to Farrell, who was thrilled by it. The actor then expanded upon this concept, adding an additional layer of symbolism to the design choice, connecting back to Oz Cobb’s role as The Penguin. She elaborated:

I shared my idea with Colin, and he was incredibly enthusiastic about it. He wholeheartedly adopted the concept, and even commented on the character’s traits. There was a certain chill and luster to the character, which he appreciated. The reason for the vault being shiny is because penguins are attracted to shine, and it served a purpose. Not only did this align with the character’s historical background and the building’s past, it gave it a unique identity, but moreover, it resonated with the emotional journey of this character as well.
