As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for cinematic escapades, I can’t help but be thrilled about Julius Avery stepping into the director’s chair for ‘They Found Us’. His genre-defying prowess, from crime dramas to WWII horrors, has always been intriguing. The prospect of him bringing his unique vision to an alien abduction thriller is nothing short of exhilarating.
Film director Julius Avery, known for movies like ‘Samaritan’, ‘Overlord’, and ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’, has signed on to helm the alien abduction thriller titled ‘They Found Us’. This project is a joint production between Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios and Temple Hill Productions, the team behind ‘Smile’ and the ‘Twilight’ series.
Avery is set to lead the way in directing the film titled “They Found Us“, penned by Jeremy Slater, who has previously worked on shows like “Moon Knight” and “The Exorcist“. Production will be overseen by Godfrey and Marty Bowen from Temple Hill, with Ford and John Fischer of Temple Hill also serving as executive producers. AGC International will manage international sales, while they will share US rights with UTA Independent Film Group.
As a gamer, I was thrilled when it was announced that Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, was initially tied to a new project. In this story, Joel Kinnaman plays a father attempting to repair his relationship with his daughter during a camping adventure in the Utah wilderness. However, their peaceful trip is disrupted by an aggressive extraterrestrial intent on abducting us and transporting us to a mysterious and terrifying alien world. The film is now undergoing recasting in preparation for filming in Australia in the early half of 2025.
Since his breakthrough in 2014 with the crime drama “Son of a Gun,” Avery has been a consistent presence in the genre film industry. His second project, “Overlord” (2018), a WWII horror film produced by J.J. Abrams, featured Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell. After that, he worked on the Sylvester Stallone superhero action movie “Samaritan” for Amazon, as well as “The Pope’s Exorcist,” a production by Screen Gems starring Russell Crowe.
Avery is managed by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, whereas Slater is handled by UTA, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead. Anant Tamirisa from AGC’s Executive Vice President of Legal & Business Affairs oversaw the negotiations for AGC and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox represented Temple Hill during the deal negotiations.
