On July 5th, as promised, Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s farewell concert was undeniably the most monumental day in heavy metal history. With Ozzy rejoining Sabbath for several songs and legendary acts like Guns N’ Roses and Metallica performing before the finale, it was an event that no fan could afford to miss, making it a must-watch streaming experience.
It turned out that a couple of groups had scheduling conflicts and couldn’t perform in Birmingham, England; among them was Judas Priest who were touring with the Scorpions in Germany at the time. As for when either band might disband, it remains uncertain.
It appears that other acts had to decline invitations for less significant reasons. One such group was Soundgarden, who received an invitation from concert music director, Tom Morello, but couldn’t attend due to their schedule being packed. The band explained their absence through a social media post on Instagram, stating simply that they were too busy.
Soundgarden has a poor excuse for missing the Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath farewell concert
The band expressed their disappointment and regrets in not being able to align their personal and group commitments to make it to the festival and participate alongside Sabbath and Ozzy.
Instead, it would have been appropriate if, upon receiving an invitation to perform at the final concert of the twin metal legends Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, you adjusted your plans to make the appearance possible. It was a single occasion, not a prolonged commitment. However, Soundgarden’s explanation for declining seems rather lackluster.
It’s possible there could be underlying factors preventing Soundgarden from attending the show. After all, while their lineup has been exceptional throughout the years, it’s hard to imagine them without Chris Cornell. His voice was truly iconic and stands among the greatest instruments in the realm of rock music history.
Attending Soundgarden’s performance, serving as a farewell to Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, might have evoked even more poignant memories due to Chris Cornell not being there.
Instead of relying solely on their fame for financial success, some bands might consider following in the footsteps of Joy Division members, who after the tragic passing of Ian Curtis, transformed into New Order and continued producing exceptional albums. In a similar vein, with Cornell’s absence, Soundgarden seems much like Joy Division without Curtis.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel disappointed that Soundgarden’s current lineup couldn’t coordinate their schedules to make an appearance. I wish guitarist Kim Thayil could have joined one of the two supergroups instead. It’s truly unfortunate that this situation has unfolded as it did.
