As a gamer with a penchant for binge-watching TV shows, I can’t help but be intrigued by the peculiar case of Norma from “Suits”. Being someone who’s spent countless hours in the digital world, I’ve come across characters that exist only in code or as voiceovers. Yet, none have quite captured my imagination like Norma – a character who never appeared on-screen but managed to leave an indelible mark on the series.
The hit Netflix show “Suits” became a record-breaking sensation and continues to captivate viewers even after its 2019 conclusion. Interestingly, one of the characters who never physically appeared on screen, Norma (Louis Litt’s assistant), has sparked ongoing conversation among fans. Tragically, she met her untimely end in Season 4, having passed away while caring for her sister off-screen. However, the show’s creator, Aaron Korsh, revealed that Norma’s death was strategically planned to introduce a new character as Louis Litt’s assistant.
2015, I shared with Yahoo that the idea for Norma’s death and its impact on Louis originated from one of us. We felt it was a compelling way to advance Donna and Louis’ relationship, given Donna’s growing discontent with Harvey. The funeral scene, where Louis expresses his gratitude to an absent Harvey, underscores Donna’s realization that she needs to move on.
As Litt transitioned forward, he preserved his assistant’s remains in an urn within his office, thus maintaining her presence throughout his working hours. Interestingly enough, this arrangement increased the frequency of her appearances on “Suits”.
Norma’s death increases her presence on Suits
Norma’s death might not be remembered as one of the most heart-wrenching TV character passings in history due to fans not having much time to bond with her emotionally. Yet, her demise holds an unexpected humor, as her urn appears regularly throughout the series, symbolizing a unique representation of Louis Litt’s former assistant that remains unmatched by any physical presence.
Currently, Aaron Korsh hasn’t shared the reasoning behind the creators’ choice not to cast an actor for the character Norma on “Suits.” However, this decision upholds a longstanding television trend where significant characters remain unseen, like Maris from “Frasier” and the President in “Veep.” This absence of Norma also underscores her perceived inconsequentiality in the corporate world at large, despite Louis Litt experiencing some impact following her demise.
In the legal drama “Suits,” Season 9 includes a significant death, not every death is trivialized as a joke. The death of Norma, while humorous in context, holds importance in its own right.
