Contains spoilers for “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 1, Episode 4
In the final moments of the third episode of “Daredevil: Born Again,” the White Tiger (Kamar de los Reyes) meets a gruesome end when a man adorned with the Punisher emblem on his bulletproof vest fatally shoots him. However, it’s revealed in the following episode that Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) wasn’t the culprit behind this crime. The genuine Punisher acknowledges that these actions were orchestrated by “fake fans,” implying that someone else is roaming around wearing his signature skull symbol, despite Frank’s reputation for aggressive behavior.
Regarding Hector Ayala’s court case, it seems he portrays a complex character that some might call a corrupt cop with a twist of anti-heroism. What many might not realize is that the series “Born Again” delves into a significant debate about the Punisher logo, as first responders and military personnel have been seen to use this symbol, represented by a skull, on their vehicles and protective gear for quite some time.
In 2005, a group of police officers from Milwaukee, colloquially known as “the Punishers”, were accused of taking vigilante actions and were criticized by many fellow officers as operating like a gang. On the other hand, in 2012, Chris Kyle, an Iraq war veteran and former Navy SEAL, published his memoir titled “American Sniper”. In this book, he mentioned that his platoon, also known as “the Punishers”, used a symbol of a skull. As he recounted, they painted the skull on their vests and various equipment. Similar to him, they were taking action against injustice. According to Kyle, the skull symbol represented their form of psychological warfare or “psyops”, designed to confuse and intimidate their Al-Qaeda adversaries, communicating that they meant business.
The Punisher’s co-creator doesn’t approve of the logo’s usage
Although certain extremist groups may use it as a symbol, it’s primarily employed by law enforcement, military personnel, and sometimes even firefighters. Marine Corps veteran Christopher Neff sheds light on why this famous skull image is so prevalent among these groups. He stated to Vulture that Frank Castle represents the epitome of Occam’s razor for the military. In simpler terms, he explained that Frank Castle symbolizes no need for concern about uniforms, inspections, or strict rules of engagement. Instead, find the wrongdoers, eliminate them, and safeguard the innocent.
Although the Punisher abides by certain rules, not everyone has appreciated the actual-world application of his symbol, the skull, even its creator Gerry Conway has expressed disapproval. In an interview with The Guardian in 2020, Conway stated, “I believe the way police use it is extrajudicial; they are law enforcement officials and they will punish you.” He further explained, “The Punisher is a lawbreaker. He symbolizes the failure of the justice system to treat everyone fairly.” Conway initially created this character in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #129 back in 1974, where he primarily played an antagonistic role. Now, Conway feels that many have misunderstood the character’s essence. “It was such a fundamental misinterpretation of what the character was and what it stood for,” he added. “In that sense, he has been desecrated.
In an effort to distance itself from controversy, Marvel has made some changes recently. For instance, the Punisher’s logo was revised in 2021, and in issue #13 of “Punisher” in 2019, the main character explicitly disowned any New York police officers who might emulate him, threatening retribution if they did so. The latest series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” has contributed to this ongoing conversation, and we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
