Uzo Aduba received a nomination for Best Comedy Emmy Award following the cancellation of Netflix’s murder mystery show, The Residence, after only one season.
During a White House state dinner, eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp, portrayed by Aduba, was called upon to investigate the murder of A.B. Wynter, the White House chief usher (played by Giancarlo Esposito). Aduba’s character, Cupp, was marketed as the world’s greatest detective.
During a special event at the White House, Aduba played Cordelia Cupp, a renowned detective, who helped solve the murder of A.B. Wynter (Giancarlo Esposito). The character of Cupp was promoted as the best detective in the world.
If “The Residence” had returned for a second season, the creators intended to transform it into an anthology series where Cupp would tackle a fresh mystery every season. Aduba won an earlier Emmy in 2014 as the outstanding guest actress in a comedy for her portrayal of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on “Orange Is the New Black”, and she followed that up by winning another Emmy the next year, this time for outstanding actress in a drama, also for her role as Suzanne on the same series.
In 2020, Aduba received the award for the best actress in a limited series or movie, honoring her performance in Mrs. America.
As a gamer, I was bummed out to hear that my favorite new show, “The Residence,” produced by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland and created by Paul William Davies (who also worked on “Scandal”), has been axed after just one season by Netflix. It’s tough to see a good show go, but I hope the creators find success with their future projects.
As a devoted fan, I must share my thoughts on “The Residence” series, as seen through the discerning eyes of a TV critic from The Hollywood Reporter. This show is a whirlwind of chaos and humor, a dramedy that kicks off with a breathless pace that only occasionally slows down in its seven out of eight episodes shown to critics. It’s a rollercoaster ride of amusement and exhaustion, with Uzo Aduba’s performance and the infectious energy of the overstuffed ensemble making it stand out. However, the mystery at its core is often overshadowed by the frenetic treatment it receives, preventing it from becoming as emotionally engaging as it could have been.
The principal actors in the debut (and solitary) season of the mystery series reminiscent of Columbo included Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Edwina Findley, Bronson Pinchot, Mary Wiseman, Julieth Restrepo, Al Mitchell, Mel Rodriguez, Ken Marino, Jason Lee, and Jane Curtin, as well as others.

Davies executive produced the series with Shondaland principals Rhimes and Betsy Beers.
