After wrapping up its fourth season on HBO, The Righteous Gemstones might not say goodbye forever.
The show centers around the Gemstone family, a well-known televangelist clan, with widowed head Eli (portrayed by John Goodman) joined by his less mature offspring Jesse (Danny McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam DeVine).

McBride, the creator of this season, shared with The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday, “As I began writing, everything seemed to be heading towards tales of endings and development, progression in essence. So I simply went along with that flow, and as we filmed it became clearer to me that I believe we’ve told the story we intended to tell.
The main cast members were taken aback when they learned that season four would be the finale, as McBride held off announcing it until the final weeks of filming. “I believe he didn’t want us to dwell on it throughout the entire season,” DeVine explained, and perhaps for the better, since Patterson confirmed, “On our last day, we all broke down in tears.
As a gamer immersed in the world of this show, I’ve always had a rough sketch of how it might conclude, but things took on new life during filming with the talented cast and crew. There’s one more ambitious dream I harbor for this series – a live version, perhaps a traveling Gemstones revival tent show. I think that would be an exciting adventure!
Patterson, also a writer for the show, expressed his desire by saying, “I’d be thrilled to do a live performance. We’ve discussed it numerous times and I truly hope that McBride is serious about it because I’m excited at the prospect.” DeVine playfully commented on the idea, “[I hope] that’s how we all wind down our careers, just at Universal Studios giving the middle finger to things while praising Jesus.” Walton Goggins, who plays Baby Billy Freeman, another televangelist, added, “Why not? Let’s bring McBride’s religion to everyone. The faith of Danny McBride.

The group pondered over the conclusion of the series, since Goggins hinted, “I’m thrilled with the ending. Every character comes out on top and everyone in this cast is performing exceptionally well; Baby Billy has a tune he sings that I believe could potentially be played on the radio this summer. I truly hope so, it would be fantastic, especially on my — I was about to say my boombox. What year is it, how old am I?”
In other words: The group discussed the finale of the series as Goggins suggested he was pleased with it, commenting that each character emerges victorious and everyone in the cast is at their peak; Baby Billy has a song that he performs which could possibly be played on radio stations this summer. He expressed hope that it would be played, stating it would sound great on his cassette player (boombox), but then questioned himself about the current year and his age.
DeVine stated, “Every actor promoting their show’s new season claims it’s the best ever, but honestly, they’re just lying charlatans. In contrast to them, I’m telling the truth – this is truly the greatest season, without a doubt.
