The Rings of Power Season 3 Receives Major Update From Amazon Boss

As a die-hard fan who has spent countless hours delving into the rich tapestry of Middle-earth, I am beyond thrilled with the success and continued life of “The Rings of Power.” The fact that it’s generating an audience of over 150 million viewers is nothing short of astounding. It’s like a second age of fandom rising!

For numerous viewers, the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” marked a significant improvement over the more leisurely and action-light first season. This upward trend is evident, as the series consistently surpasses Amazon streaming records. Despite Season 3 not receiving an official confirmation yet, the fate of the show has been publicly acknowledged by Amazon Studios.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, recently chatted with Variety about Prime Video matters, disclosing that The Rings of Power is still performing exceptionally well on the platform. It appears that critics may need to find another series to critique, as The Rings of Power has amassed over 150 million viewers. Given Amazon’s substantial investment of over $1 billion in acquiring and producing this property, it’s understandable that they would be pleased with its success. Salke commented:

If you consider the company’s perspective on such assets over a prolonged period, it views this as a long-term investment in that franchise. (…) With more than 150 million viewers tuning in and interacting with the show, we’re all feeling quite optimistic about it.

According to previous updates, Season 3 of “The Rings of Power” is being developed, but it has not been officially approved as of now. However, it appears that renewal news is imminent. When the show was initially announced, it was promoted as a five-season production. Recently, Salke addressed whether the original 50-episode commitment remains. Fortunately, she confirmed that “The Rings of Power” will continue to air, and this longevity can be attributed to viewers, including those who may not like the series, for tuning in weekly.

“I strongly believe that our commitment isn’t the primary factor behind our actions. We’ll keep producing the show as long as we see it being enjoyed and watched by a global audience, to the point where it becomes profitable. It’s clear that a significant number of people are interested, so there’s no question about whether or not the show will carry on.

As a devoted fan of The Rings of Power, I’ve always known that its future has been meticulously planned since the show’s inception. Set during the enigmatic yet crucial period of the Second Age in J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive Lord of the Rings lore, the series is gradually leading us towards the climactic battle that will mark the dawn of a new era. If we’re lucky enough to have a fifth season, it promises to delve into the War of the Last Alliance – an epic conflict that signifies the dramatic conclusion of the Second Age and Sauron’s first significant defeat.

Since Amazon agreed to produce 50 episodes, showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne for “The Rings of Power” have always had a specific plan in mind. From unveiling the Stranger as Gandalf to hinting at Sauron’s downfall, the series is filling a gap in Tolkien’s writings, whether or not we approve. In Season 3, “The Rings of Power” will further explore the canon and is providing fans with a Lord of the Rings experience that the films couldn’t offer.
