Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson continues to rule Hollywood’s blockbuster scene, a fact that won’t be changing soon, demonstrated by his return as Maui in the live-action adaptation of Moana and reprising his role as Luke Hobbs in an upcoming Fast & Furious film. However, Johnson isn’t only focusing on action films; he’s also diving into more dramatic roles, playing UFC legend Mark Kerr in the A24 movie The Smashing Machine. This wouldn’t be noteworthy alone, but Johnson will also collaborate with Leonardo DiCaprio for Martin Scorsese’s next film. What makes this even more significant is that Johnson shared on social media why the story they are telling holds a special personal meaning for him.
In case you missed the news from a few weeks back, Johnson, DiCaprio and Emily Blunt will be leading Scorsese’s currently-untitled movie that was described by Deadline as following someone like Robert de Niro’s Jimmy the Gent from Goodfellas, “but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii.” Johnson shared a screenshot of that article on Instagram and included the following caption:
Delighted to have experienced the most creatively stimulating phase of my professional journey, collaborating closely with my friends, not forgetting the legendary Martin Scorsese. The 60s, 70s, and 80s saw the mafia exerting significant power in New York, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, and notably, Hawaii, where I was brought up. Stay tuned for more!
