The Royals: Bhumi Pednekar discusses society’s POV on ‘woman that owns up to her desires’, recalls experiences that made her fearless

Bhumi Pednekar makes a return with another compelling portrayal in The Royals, now available on Netflix. In a chat with Times Now, the actress spoke candidly about her character, Sophia – a self-made, driven woman balancing love and life. Bhumi confessed that she identifies closely with Sophia, particularly since both of them unabashedly embrace their desires. “I believe people are often intimidated by a woman who openly claims her desires, ambitions, and aspirations in life,” she explained, adding that she has always been unafraid to do the same.

She attributed her courage and self-sufficiency to her upbringing and the necessity of being self-reliant from a young age. In addition, much of her fearlessness can be traced back to the life she’s lived and the experiences she’s had. From an early point in her life, she found herself needing to look after herself, which is quite remarkable. She doesn’t harbor any resentment or sadness about it; instead, she views it as a great fortune that she developed such strong independence at a young age.

Bhumi shared that one aspect she adores about Sophia is how multi-faceted the character is. She appreciates that Sophia possesses a strong drive alongside nurturing qualities, and noted that there remains in her a yearning for love. Bhumi disclosed that this conflict, where ambition coexists with sensitivity, is something she can personally relate to.

Bhumi acknowledged that, similar to Sophia, she harbors the same apprehension that love could potentially divert her attention from her career. This concern, she contends, arises from the challenging journey she undertook to establish her professional path. Bhumi found solace in how Sophia transforms her pain into her work, a strategy she confesses she has utilized herself.

What particularly resonated with her about Sophia was her candor. Bhumi disclosed that, unlike herself who used to be more reserved, Sophia welcomes diverse feelings and energies more freely. Playing this role served as an emotional growth catalyst for Bhumi, enabling her to become more receptive to love in her personal life.

The actress expressed that embodying Sophia was a healing process for her. She asserted that she wholeheartedly embraced the character and felt a profound connection with her. In many aspects, Sophia seemed like an extension of Bhumi herself. “The Royals,” featuring Ishaan Khatter, Zeenat Aman, and others, is now accessible to stream on Netflix.
