As a seasoned film enthusiast and political junkie who has seen more than my fair share of global leaders squabble on screen, I must say that “Rumours” is a breath of fresh (and rather chilly) air. This satirical masterpiece from Guy Maddin and his team takes the G7 summit to new heights – or should I say, depths? The all-star cast, led by the incomparable Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, delivers performances that are as hilarious as they are insightful.
In my opinion, I found the film “Rumours” to be a gripping, darkly comedic critique of the world’s influential political leaders, portraying them as bumbling incompetents. This satirical masterpiece, directed by the Canadian trio of Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, depicts the G7 – an organization comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union – gathering in picturesque Germany for their annual summit. The star-studded cast, headed by Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, are so engrossed in drafting a powerless “provisional statement” that they overlook the fact they’re all isolated amidst an impending apocalypse.
In a recent interview with MovieWeb, the talented cast members Nikki Amuka-Bird (the UK prime minister), Roy Dupuis (the charismatic Canadian prime minister smitten with his British counterpart), and Rolando Ravello (the endearing yet simple Italian prime minister who closely follows the American president) shared their experiences. These seasoned actors were granted ample room to develop their distinctive characters, a creative liberty that Amuka-Bird found rewarding and inspiring as she worked alongside such a distinguished ensemble.
When I initially conversed with Guy [Maddin], my curiosity was piqued about his thoughts on the topic. He responded by giving me full creative control, stating that I could choose the political party and even decide whether she leans conservative or labor. This opened up a fascinating exploration of leadership as a broader concept. What type of personality might she possess? What motivates someone to seek such a position? These were the aspects I decided to focus on.
After immersing myself deeply into the script, focusing on my character’s unwavering determination to complete the task, even as the world crumbled, Amuka-Bird explains. “I realized, this is her essence. Furthermore, working alongside and interacting with the other actors really helped me understand my role within the group’s dynamic.
Rumours’ Brilliant Ensemble
Dupuis utilized old footage from past G7 gatherings to develop the physical behaviors and handshake mannerisms of his character. He also acknowledged that the script was exceptionally well-written, keeping audiences engaged. To remain faithful to the script’s emotional undertones, since his character had a touch of sensitivity, he embarked on an emotional journey as he courted both the UK leader and Blanchett’s German chancellor. The man with the man-bun and a striking Canadian appearance experienced a wave of emotions throughout the film. Ravello, who almost overshadowed everyone else with his warmth, could only heap praise on his co-stars, stating that working on such a movie was a unique opportunity for him, and collaborating with these talented actors was like receiving a gift.
In our discussion, we moved towards handling projects that involve coordinating with three directors simultaneously. Despite potential complexities, there was minimal chaos or ambiguity on set. This was due to the shared vision and openness of the filmmakers to consider the suggestions from their actors, as Dupuis puts it.
Initially, the notion of having three directors might seem daunting, but surprisingly, it flowed smoothly and often felt like working with a single director. This was due to their exceptional understanding and harmony. They weren’t overly accustomed to directing actors extensively in their past projects. Instead, they were learning how to effectively communicate with the actors during this process. It was a collaborative effort among all involved parties.
According to Dupuis, they were exceptionally understanding towards us, given the challenging circumstances. After all, we were in the forest during the cold nights. They displayed endless patience and kindness not only among themselves but also towards us.
G7 Incompetence
The storyline in Rumours is absolutely wild, brimming with intricate dialogue exchanges and interactions. The cast engagingly discusses past G7 meetings, praising their preliminary statements as exceptional. Amuka-Bird dismisses any challenges, stating that everyone shared the same perspective, “It was straightforward. We had a week of rehearsal before filming, and the three directors held similar viewpoints. We improvised frequently, so it was enjoyable.” She further notes that the cast formed a tight bond during production.
As the lead critic on this production, I can attest that this film was a true collaborative effort. We spent countless hours together on set, sharing not only our acting duties but also the camaraderie of long, cold days in the woods. In between takes, we huddled together in a tent, fostering a strong bond that transcended our roles and transformed us into a tight-knit team, even a makeshift family. This closeness made it effortless to perform those intimate scenes, as we developed an unspoken understanding with one another, allowing us the freedom to take creative risks. Truly, this experience was unlike any other.
Dupuis concurs: “I’d put it this way: Fantastic actors elevate your performance. The casting was spot-on. The scripts were brilliantly crafted. In a sense, the script seems to guide itself. It’s almost like a stage play. Moreover, since no one had ever attempted anything similar before, there were no set rules. It was more like, let’s take a chance and dive in headfirst. That collective experience really inspired us as a team.
“This movie offers an opportunity to laugh and ponder. The world, at this time, is not ideal. I hope we can look out for each other. I believe that’s the only way.
Rumours is currently in limited theatrical release from Bleecker Street.
