As a film enthusiast with a heart full of nostalgia, I must say that Patrick Renna‘s journey from the iconic “The Sandlot” to his latest sports film, “You Gotta Believe,” has been nothing short of inspiring. It’s like watching James Earl Jones evolve into Nick Fury, but with a baseball glove instead of a shield!
In discussing with actor Patrick Renna prior to the premiere of his new sports movie, “You Gotta Believe,” we found ourselves reminiscing about an uplifting true story from 2002, where a youth baseball team’s journey towards the Little League World Series was documented by ESPN. The charm and freshness that made Renna stand out in childhood films like “The Big Green” and “The Sandlot,” which remains a timeless classic even today, were still evident. Here’s why:
“Renna shared with MovieWeb that she finds this movie suitable for today’s times, as it carries a message like ‘venture out and experience some minor trouble, just not too much.’ In her opinion, it’s a valuable lesson given the increasing influence of screens, AI, and technology in our world. She has shown it to her 7-year-old but finds that her 4-year-old gets puzzled because seeing Dad at a younger age can be confusing for him. Therefore, it’s not the top choice playing in their household; even Ninja Turtles still take the lead.”
Renna continued:
In a casual and clear manner, this conversation could be phrased as follows: “I often find myself reminiscing about my role in this film, which I associate with James Earl Jones from ‘Sandlot’, who embodied an experienced actor coming back to his roots. It’s almost like a full circle, and it’s a common topic of conversation when people ask me questions about ‘Sandlot’. My most vivid memories are not necessarily what’s on the screen in the final product, but rather the moments we had during filming, as I haven’t watched the movie all that much.”
He went on, expressing his affection for being part of a baseball production, “Being among nine or ten children playing baseball [for ‘You Gotta Believe’] was incredibly nostalgic for me. It was almost like the first instance where I’ve been on a baseball set. Although I’ve worked on numerous films since, this could be considered my debut in baseball-themed productions.”
Appreciating Greg Kinnear and Mel Gibson
After many years, Renna re-entered the world of sports movies with the film “You Gotta Believe,” featuring Luke Wilson. In this project, he played a role where his character as a league official frequently clashed with the main team’s coach, portrayed by Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear. It was exciting to see Luke again since they worked together on an episode of “The X-Files” years ago. It was wonderful to reconnect with him. I have always admired Greg Kinnear and most of my scenes were with him. He’s incredibly talented, and it was fascinating to witness firsthand why he excels at his craft. Working alongside such seasoned actors was a unique experience
In the coming months, Renna will be sharing the screen with another baseball-centric film titled “Monster Summer,” scheduled for release in October. This production also includes Mel Gibson in a significant role. According to Renna, watching Gibson at work is an enlightening experience, as he observes: “Working with Mel Gibson, you understand why he is one of the greatest actors ever.” He also mentions that he has worked more with Greg Kinney (sic) than with Gibson in their previous collaboration in “You Gotta Believe.” Renna found it enjoyable to observe the subtle nuances in an actor like Gibson and learn from them. As for the latter film, “You Gotta Believe” is currently running in cinemas
