The Sandman: Final Season Malfunctions with Yet Another Shakespeare Recast

In contrast to what fans of the graphic novels envisioned, Netflix’s “The Sandman” isn’t receiving a sprawling multi-season narrative. However, it’s still managing to wrap up its tale in the upcoming second and last season. With filming currently underway, one of the key characters for Season 2 is being played by a different actor for the second time – this character is Morpheus, portrayed by Tom Sturridge. Throughout his long journey, Morpheus encounters significant historical figures, such as William Shakespeare. In the comics, Shakespeare significantly influences Morpheus’ character development and features in some of Neil Gaiman’s most acclaimed comic issues. Given that Netflix is hurrying to fit Shakespeare’s story into the final season, his casting announcement serves as a hint of this compression.

According to Redanian Intelligence, for the third time, The Sandman Season 2 has brought on board an actor to embody William Shakespeare. Will Keen, recognized from shows like The Crown and His Dark Materials, will bring to life the elderly incarnation of the playwright in The Sandman’s concluding season. In the original comics of The Sandman, there are not three distinct versions of Shakespeare within the storyline. Instead, Morpheus encounters Shakespeare at different stages of his lifespan. The first season introduced us to Samuel Blenkin portraying a younger Shakespeare. It was previously announced that Luke Allen-Gale would play the adult version of Shakespeare in Season 2.

It seems that Netflix might be merging various storylines from the remaining comics of The Sandman into a single season, as Season 1 covered only about 10% of the original story. With such a vast amount left to explore in Season 2, it’s intriguing to consider how the events surrounding Morpheus’ past dealings with Shakespeare will unfold in this streamlined live-action adaptation.

Why Is ‘The Sandman’ Ending Early?

Fans expected “The Sandman” adaptation on Netflix to last for a long time due to its extensive comic book history and spin-offs. However, after allegations of sexual abuse and human trafficking against Neil Gaiman and his ex-wife Amanda Palmer surfaced, all studios decided to end their associations with the author. Other adaptations were either cancelled or ended prematurely, such as “Good Omens” on Amazon Prime Video, which will only have a special feature-length episode instead of a full third season.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing that our beloved series “The Sandman” would be wrapping up after Season 2. In a heartfelt statement following the announcement, the showrunner, Alan Heinberg, explained that this decision was rooted in the narrative’s essence. You see, since the series’ inception, it has been solely dedicated to unfolding the tale of Dream, and as we stood on the precipice of 2022, we realized that the remaining Dream-centric material from the comics only stretched far enough for one more season. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but we knew it was the right call for the story’s cohesion and integrity.
