“Twister” has been a blockbuster success, drawing crowds eager to witness an illustrious cast pursuing tornadoes across rural Oklahoma. While a large-scale disaster movie is undoubtedly enticing, it’s not just the spectacular special effects and camera work that have filled theaters for “Twister.” Currently, Glen Powell is enjoying his time in the limelight, having made waves last year with “Anyone But You.” At 35, he’s now one of Hollywood’s heartthrobs. The scene in “Twister” where he dons a snug white T-shirt in heavy rain was perhaps predictable to expand their audience appeal. However, it seems the allure of this scene wasn’t solely due to Powell’s attractive appearance.”
In a chat with Collider, filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung discussed the creative decisions behind the visual style of Twisters, as well as the atmosphere he aimed to evoke. The interview also delved into the popular scene featuring Powell in a soaked, white t-shirt, which has become a viral sensation on TikTok. Contrary to its suggestive portrayal, this scene wasn’t intended to be steamy; instead, the wet clothing and rain were part of the overall narrative context.
Initially, I assumed the rain scenes were just an effective method for expressing emotions and tones, but the talented ladies behind the camera soon showed me that it was playing a much bigger role. As the filmmaker put it, “We realized the rain was not just setting the mood; it was contributing significantly to the overall narrative.”
Reflecting on how rain can add a poetic touch, my character Eunice [Jera Lee] remarked, “That’s what he’ll wear.” As we initiated the rain, I anticipated it would create a meaningful scene. When he emerged, I exclaimed, “Of course!” The pieces hadn’t clicked together for me until that moment, and as I watched on the monitor, I realized the impact. Turning to Ashley Jay Sandberg, our executive producer, I grinned and said, “Thank you.”
The depicted scene features Powell strolling under the rain while wearing a somewhat snug shirt, prior to entering a vehicle. Compared to the numerous bare-chested scenes in “Anyone But You” and his magazine covers, it’s a subtle wink at the actor’s popular heartthrob image without going overboard, specifically tailored for this film.
During filming, the actor from Top Gun: Maverick swiftly grasped the situation too, sharing with Variety. Regardless, he maintained a positive attitude and really gave his all in that scene for the cameras. Given Powell’s rigorous workout routine, why not flaunt it a bit?
Originally, during the final edit of the film, I advocated for a considerable reduction of that specific scene. To my delight, some female editors suggested reinstating the entire sequence for the theatrical release. Wisely, they did so as it turned out that a snippet from the scene was included in the trailer for Twisters. Chung, the director, clarified:
As a seasoned film editor with years of experience under my belt, I’ve learned that every decision made during the editing process can be met with varying reactions from different people involved. In this particular instance, I decided to trim down a scene in a film to reduce its running time, thinking it would go unnoticed by most viewers. However, much to my surprise, I was met with an unexpected response – one that highlighted the power of female solidarity and the influence it can have on creative decisions.
He ended up restoring it, and women everywhere can thank the editing team for looking out for them. The scene’s virality was helpful for the marketing team as well, so Chung probably isn’t regretting his decision.
The decision to incorporate rain in this scene seems reminiscent of classic action films featuring famous actors, such as Jeff Goldblum opening his shirt in “Jurassic Park” and Brad Pitt fighting shirtless in “Fight Club.” This scene appears to pay tribute to the charismatic, muscular action stars that defined movies of the past.
