The Shocking Truth Behind Why ‘Miss Congeniality 3’ Never Happened!

Miss Congeniality, featuring Sandra Bullock alongside Michael Caine and Benjamin Bratt, remains one of her most outstanding performances. In this film, Bullock plays Gracie Hart, an FBI agent unexpectedly turned beauty pageant contestant – a role she detests due to her distaste for such events. However, the tough-as-nails girl morphs into a glamorous competitor at the Miss United States Pageant, all while investigating threats and incidents of violence among her fellow participants. With numerous mishaps and blunders along the way, Bullock delivers an entertaining and memorable performance.

The popularity of “Miss Congeniality” led to a sequel titled “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous,” which hit screens in 2005. Five years following the first film, this installment saw Sandra Bullock team up with Regina Hall for a female-centric comedy. Due to Gracie Hart’s high-profile status, she found herself paired with Agent Sam Fuller (played by Hall) as her FBI partner.

In the first ‘Miss Congeniality’, Bullock won a Golden Globe for Best Actress, became a massive box office hit, and generally received positive reviews from critics. However, the sequel didn’t perform nearly as well, and making it was arguably a mistake on Bullock’s part – one that essentially put an end to the franchise and any prospects of ‘Miss Congeniality 3‘.

Sandra Bullock Admitted How She Felt About ‘Miss Congeniality 2’

In her early days, Sandra Bullock shone in films such as ‘Speed’ (1994), ‘While You Were Sleeping’ (1995), and ‘Practical Magic’ (1998). By 2000, Bullock had mastered the art of combining romance and action within a single movie, which was particularly evident in ‘Miss Congeniality’. The film’s success at the box office, with earnings exceeding $212 million globally, almost certainly meant that a sequel was on its way.

Nevertheless, the sequel titled “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous” came out in the year 2005. During that period, Sandra Bullock spoke about reprising her character as Gracie Hart.

Initially, there was no compulsion to produce a sequel, so we didn’t even contemplate the idea, following the completion of the initial film. However, around a year later, writer Marc Lawrence and I engaged in casual banter about what might have transpired if an FBI agent had carried out the actions similar to Gracie’s and foiled a bomb threat, saving Miss United States on live TV. Given the nature of the media, she would undoubtedly appear on every talk show. Consequently, this concept served as a starting point for our discussions, which eventually grew into something we found captivating.

20 years later, Bullock had another opinion of revisiting the world of Miss Congeniality:

“God no, no. No. [Miss Congeniality] 2 shouldn’t have been done.”

One Good Thing Came of Making ‘Miss Congeniality 2’ for Bullock

Despite the challenges that came with making Miss Congeniality 2, there was still a silver lining to be found. Regrettably, it didn’t involve Sandra Bullock riding on the back of Dolly Parton, as one might hope, but rather, according to Sandra Bullock herself, there was something positive to take away from the experience.

“But I’m glad that it did, because it was with Regina [Hall], who just, I freakin’ adore.”

In a comment hinting at potential optimism for supporters of Gracie Hart, Bullock didn’t completely rule out the possibility of seeing more of this character on the big screen. However, it is unlikely that Bullock would reprise her role in this scenario, as the concept would instead delve into the backstory of the character.

If there’s no prequel featuring a younger version of Gracie Hart, it seems that even at around 10 to 11 years old, she would behave remarkably similar to how we know her as an adult.

Whether or not this means a Miss Congeniality trilogy is actually on the table remains unclear.

‘Miss Congeniality 2’ Isn’t the Only Sequel Sandra Bullock Regrets Making

As a devoted cinephile, I must share my thoughts about the global box office earnings of “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous.” This sequel managed to gather around $101 million worldwide, which is significantly less than half compared to its original counterpart. Critical reception for this follow-up wasn’t particularly warm, with Roger Ebert himself labeling it as “unnecessary,” implying that watching it might not be worth the effort. Interestingly, Ebert had a favorable opinion towards Sandra Bullock’s other sequel, “Speed 2” from 1997, but even he couldn’t escape the negative response that film received. It’s no secret that this less-than-stellar reception didn’t escape the notice of Sandra Bullock herself.

Regardless of asserting that she had taken lessons from her earlier film in 2005, Sandra Bullock indeed starred in the movie titled “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous.” The actress was questioned about whether the poor performance of “Speed 2” influenced her apprehension when producing “Miss Congeniality 2”.

The movie taught me that if something isn’t already established in the script, it’s not worth pursuing. If the film could be compelling on its own, as if a prequel didn’t exist, then it would be an interesting project. I had enough time away from the character to approach her with fresh eyes and appreciate how well-crafted she was. Whether Gracie is male or female, this was a fantastic comic role that Marc had created.

Miss Congeniality 2 did finally lead to a decision from Bullock:

In my younger days, I followed a rule against making sequels when I wasn’t confident enough to pursue what I truly believed in. Now, as I grow older, I find myself learning to stand up for the projects that I think would make for great screen content – and if people get upset during meetings about it, so be it.

She seems to have eased up on that, however, with Practical Magic 2 rumored to be in the works…
