As a child of the late ’90s, I can vividly remember the thrill and excitement that surrounded “The Sixth Sense.” M. Night Shyamalan’s masterpiece was the first film that truly captivated my imagination, making me question everything I thought I knew about storytelling. It was a time before spoilers were rampant on the internet, and the secrecy surrounding the plot twist only added to its allure.
Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan’s movies are famous for their unexpected plot twists that often flip the entire story upside down in the final act. The twist in his films began with “The Sixth Sense”, where it was revealed that Bruce Willis’ character Malcolm was actually a ghost throughout the movie. This is one of the most significant movie twists ever, with Haley Joel Osment explaining how they managed to keep it a secret. Shyamalan’s films differ significantly from those in the Marvel universe.
The movie “The Sixth Sense,” now available for streaming with a Max subscription, gained immense popularity upon its release, largely due to the powerful impact of Bruce Willis’ twist. Over time, it has become ingrained in popular culture, and it appears that keeping the plot twist a secret wasn’t quite as challenging as guarding Marvel secrets. In an interview with IndieWire, Osment discussed the management of the twist, sharing his thoughts:
In simpler terms, during the late ’90s, there was no formal gathering, discussion, or strategic planning about maintaining the secret in question. The time period we were in didn’t have as much of a “spoiler culture” as it does today. Also, the internet wasn’t as widespread then, so people couldn’t easily take and share photos from movie sets without having to physically develop the film first.
Nowadays, things aren’t managed quite like they were back then. In 1999, when the internet was still in its infancy, M. Night Shyamalan and his team didn’t pay as much attention to keeping the major twist of “The Sixth Sense” a secret. Fortunately, everything turned out alright in the end.
Osment’s remarks contrast significantly with the usual approach for managing modern movie projects today. Nowadays, it’s quite common for films to be tightly guarded secrets, often involving missing scripts and closed set environments. Even so, productions like Deadpool 3 faced leaks due to filming in public areas and drones that captured the action.
Indeed, over the years, M. Night Shyamalan has become adept at preserving surprises in his films, especially in this digital age. The plot of his latest film “Trap” was shrouded in secrecy before its premiere, and there was much buzz about the twist in his interconnected movie titled “Glass“.
Many people found themselves captivated by M. Night Shyamalan’s directorial prowess for the first time with the movie “The Sixth Sense,” and they were hooked on his intricate plot twists which appeared in subsequent films such as “Signs,” “The Village,” and others. His most recent film, “Trap,” offered a thrilling horror experience during the summer season.
The movie “Trap” is currently playing in cinemas. In the meantime, let’s keep an eye out for future projects by the director. Here are some upcoming movie releases slated for 2025.
