As a die-hard fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I can’t help but marvel at the behind-the-scenes tales that have emerged from the show over the years. One such story involves David Boreanaz and his Italian culinary prowess! Who knew that a shared love for pasta could lead to a career-defining role?
Even though it’s been almost two decades since the finale of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” aired in May 2003, Joss Whedon’s supernatural series continues to be a vibrant element in the pop culture world. David Boreanaz, who portrayed Angel during the first three seasons before landing his own spinoff, shared behind-the-scenes tales… and let us in on the surprising role Italian cuisine played in it all.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s acclaimed series, available through a Hulu subscription and often hailed as one of the greatest supernatural teen dramas ever made, features Boreanaz as an outstanding actor in the Buffyverse. In conversation with People about Angel’s television stint, he reminisced on initially securing the vampire part. To quote him directly:
I landed the role of Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer thanks to casting director Marcia Shulman. Our initial meeting lasted an hour and a half, and we spent most of that time discussing our favorite Italian eateries in New York City. Eventually, she suggested, “Alright, shall we go over the script now?
As a chemistry enthusiast, establishing a comfortable and genuine bond with a lab partner is the dream scenario for any experiment. Similarly, David Boreanaz seemed to effortlessly forge a connection with Marcia Shulman, long before they actually stepped onto the set as Angel. I can only imagine that this rapport provided him with an additional dash of self-assurance prior to his audition.
Angel became a significant part of some exceptional “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” episodes, and his romantic relationship with the main character played by Sarah Michelle Gellar was the series’ central love story during its first three seasons on TV. Boreanaz mentioned in an interview that the timing of his audition might have played a role in him getting the part. He explained:
For them, it was already the ninth hour. They required this specific character within four days. As I read along with them, I found myself thinking, ‘This is going to be awful.’ But then it transformed into, ‘I can’t believe I made it through that!’ And subsequently, I managed to get through the following stage, and eventually secured the job.
Indeed, that’s quite clear. Portraying a vampire appears to be difficult, considering David Boreanaz might have been asked to expose his fictional fangs during an Buffy audition. However, he seemed confident and eventually played Angel successfully for many years after giving it a shot.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but voice my perspective: While some fans passionately argue that Buffy should have ended up with Angel, or believe their love was eternal, others are staunchly #TeamSpike. This age-old debate over the titular character’s two vampiric loves shows no signs of abating. Personally, I’m grateful for David Boreanaz’s culinary talents, which ultimately secured him the role that kept him on our screens for an impressive 8 seasons across Buffy and Angel.
You can currently stream both “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off, “Angel,” on Hulu. To help you decide what to watch next, check out the latest premieres on TV for your upcoming binge session.
