As a fan, I can’t help but feel awe-struck by the Washington dynasty taking over Hollywood! Denzel’s reign as Macrinus in Gladiator 2 is just the tip of the iceberg for this incredible family. With Malcolm directing and John David starring in The Piano Lesson, it seems like the Washingtons are unstoppable.
This week’s shaping up to be quite the rollercoaster ride for me, being a Washington in our household! The legendary Denzel Washington is creating quite a stir – and I’m betting on some award nods – with his portrayal of Macrinus in Sir Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2. Simultaneously, my brothers Malcolm and John David are making waves with their Oscar-worthy production, The Piano Lesson, premiering on Netflix following a limited theater run. Malcolm takes the helm as director for this Tony-nominated August Wilson play adaptation, while John David graces our screens in the lead role. And guess who’s producing it? Yup, you guessed it – none other than Dad!
So yeah, a massive weekend for the Washingtons.
Despite John David Washington currently promoting “The Piano Lesson”, interviews often veer towards discussing his past roles, particularly “The Creator” and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”, which were initially affected by the limited release practices during the COVID pandemic. During that time, he starred in both productions. They garnered a lot of positive critical reviews, but their audiences were hesitant to watch movies in theaters with strangers due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic. This caution was quite reasonable.
A greater number of individuals have been enjoying the movie “Tenet” through home video and streaming platforms. And the film’s standout scenes are still receiving praise. One such scene is John David Washington’s humorous “hot sauce” moment, where he enters a kitchen ready to fight against a roomful of thugs. It unfolds in this manner:
During his appearance on the TopMob’s official ReelBlend podcast, John David shared the behind-the-scenes story of how the iconic line was created, as well as Director Nolan’s surprising reaction to it. In conversation with ReelBlend, Washington discussed…
In our conversation, he expressed the need for a safety measure before the action sequence began, and I understood him. Originally, the scene was designed with staff members fleeing from the kitchen, which included cooks and the maitre d’. When I realized that my ordered hot sauce had been missing for an hour, I made a humorous remark, which elicited laughter from both Nolan and Jackson Spidell. However, I apologized after the initial take, but Nolan requested another attempt with a more subdued version while keeping the line. Overall, he appreciated my improvisation.
It’s thrilling news! Christopher Nolan’s films have little scope for spontaneity. Particularly his latest work, Tenet, which is a meticulously crafted puzzle where every piece must fit perfectly to complete the picture. As John David Washington elaborated in an interview with ReelBlend:
He’s so specific with his writing and stuff. But you’d be surprised. Chris, at least in my experience, embraced doing takes differently every time, embraced finding the character. He’s hiring you because he knows what you’ll bring to the character. And that’s what it felt like with a lot of these giants I’ve been able to work with.
Examine the career path of John David. At 40 years old, he’s had the opportunity to collaborate with esteemed directors such as Christopher Nolan, Spike Lee, David O. Russell, David Lowery, Sam Levinson, and his brother Malcolm. He is constantly seeking knowledge, refining his skills, and striving for growth. If you have a Netflix subscription, you can watch his latest film titled “The Piano Lesson.” Additionally, you can listen to our full interview with John David, along with reviews for both the films “Wicked” and “Gladiator 2“, by clicking on this link.
