The Story Behind Justin Bieber's Team Getting Involved In My Old Ass' Hilarious Mushroom Trip Scene: 'It's A Love Letter To Him'

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia for the pop culture icons of my youth, I was utterly charmed by “My Old Ass”. The scene where Maisy Stella’s character, Elliott, serenades Justin Bieber with his own song is nothing short of magical. It transported me back to those days when ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ was the soundtrack to my dreams and I too, like Elliott, wished for a chance to be serenaded by the Biebs himself.

If you’ve recently watched “My Old Ass“, now available on Amazon Prime Video, you’re aware that it’s one of the sweetest films released this year. Just like me, it seems that you haven’t stopped thinking about the scene where Maisy Stella’s character Elliott goes on a mushroom trip and sings to Justin Bieber about her crush. Even when TopMob interviewed the film’s leading actress, it was clear that she was still amazed by that moment. Stella and writer/director Megan Park discussed how this scene ended up in the movie.

At the beginning of the film, Elliott and her friends venture into the Muskoka woods on Elliott’s 18th birthday for a mushroom-fueled adventure. This scenario seems to summon Elliott’s future self (portrayed by Aubrey Plaza), who warns her about a man named Chad, whom she encounters shortly after their conversation. As Elliott finds herself growing smitten with Chad without any warning signs, she tries mushrooms again in an attempt to connect with her older self once more. However, this time the trip takes the teen on a journey through her nine-year-old Justin Bieber fantasy, culminating in an impromptu musical performance within the movie. Regarding Justin Bieber’s involvement, Park commented as follows:

I mean, listen, I don’t know, his team approved the usage of that song and the whole thing and yeah, we had to get his team’s sign off and they did. He’s a Toronto kid though. He’s been spotted up in Muskoka, so we hope that he saw it and loved it.

In my gaming world, the tune she’s referring to is Justin Bieber’s 2009 hit “One Less Lonely Girl” from his debut album. Back in my old days, I used to dream of being that girl he serenaded, the one he’d invite on stage to share flowers with. Now, we can’t be certain if Bieber himself watched this scene, but it had to get approval from his team. As Maisy Stella put it, it’s quite likely that Justin was part of the action.

Something quite special, indeed, resonates with me regarding the movie ‘One Less Lonely Girl’. As a child, it held immense significance in shaping my perspective. If only he could have watched it too, as it would complete a full circle for him. It’s almost like a heartfelt tribute, and I can only hope that he possesses the same charm I sensed back then.

It appears as though the character, My Old Ass, was inspired by Maisy Stella’s personal imaginings and resulted in the most hilarious moment in the film, a situation that many young fans of Beliebers would likely find relatable. Stella herself made this observation.

I can only wish for his acceptance, and that’s it – the mere thought of his endorsement is what truly matters to me, whether it be about any situation or endeavor, it’s always been about Justin Bieber’s seal of approval.

Oh, wouldn’t it be thrilling to catch Justin Bieber’s response as he watches this heartfelt tribute unfold? In the video, Megan Park describes the scene as a “love letter” dedicated to him. She even added that she believed he had style – or “swag” – and I’m confident he would appreciate this fantastic rendition of one of his early hits. As a new dad himself, I bet he’d find it entertaining!

In my chat with Maisy Stella and Megan Park, they shared their experiences of collaborating with the incredible Margot Robbie as a producer, and how they revolutionized the script through the film’s distinctive coming out moment. Catch “My Old Ass” streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime now!
