The Superman Trailer Character Everyone Can’t Stop Talking About (It’s Not Who You Think)

As a longtime fan of the DC universe, I must admit that the “Superman” teaser trailer left me utterly thrilled and emotional. However, what truly stole the show for me was the appearance of Krypto, Superman’s canine companion. Having owned several rescue dogs myself, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to this super-powered pooch.

Not only does the “Superman” teaser trailer provide the first footage of the titular hero in action, but it also shows off a host of other DC characters set to feature in the comic book movie, including Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Metamorpho. The appearance of many of these characters isn’t exactly surprising, however, since the leaks of James Gunn’s “Superman” movie almost made Twitter explode a few months ago.

In this instance, the current MVP (Most Valuable Player) isn’t Superman or any other well-known characters. Instead, the main character who steals the show in the trailer emerges halfway through, as Superman lies injured on an icy landscape. Despite his dire circumstances, there’s still a glimmer of hope. As he calls for help, the distance hums with snowy rumblings before Krypto swoops in to the rescue. Superman then requests that Krypto takes him home, and true to form, the superdog grabs hold of Superman’s cape and carries him there.

Many fans found James Gunn’s “Superman” movie to be authentic and convincing, as evidenced by numerous comments on Reddit. One user particularly appreciated the portrayal of Superman’s loyal pet dog, stating, “I’m glad that Superman’s sidekick is just his faithful canine.” The positive response indicates a general approval for the incorporation of DC Comics’ most iconic animal companion in the narrative. Even the often contentious X community applauded Krypto, with some going as far as threatening action if harm were to come to the character, stating, “If anything happens to Krypto, I will take revenge like John Wick.

Krypto the Superdog is inspired by James Gunn’s real-life dog

At the exclusive trailer debut (as reported by Deadline), James Gunn shared some exciting insights about his upcoming “Superman” movie. It seems they aim to delve deeper into the expansive lore of the Man of Steel, even incorporating Krypto the Superdog, who might just outmuscle Superman himself! While the trailer evokes powerful emotions between Kal-El and Krypto, it appears their connection onscreen may not fully mirror their bond in reality, as hinted by the filmmaker.

According to Gunn, his bond with Krypto is intricate; it’s not that he’s the ultimate canine. There’s a deeper side to Krypto, beyond what we perceive from the trailer.

Earlier, Gunn shared that the portrayal of Krypto was inspired by a rescue dog named Ozu, which he took in. He suggested that the Superdog might cause trouble for Superman due to his unruly behavior and difficulty controlling his powers. However, as every dog is special in its own way, Krypto eventually becomes the most cherished canine when “Superman” premieres on July 11, 2025, entering the DC Universe with a wagging tail.
