As a seasoned gamer and a lifelong connoisseur of television romance narratives, I must say that the love story between Meryl Streep‘s Loretta and Martin Short’s Oliver in “Only Murders in the Building” has been nothing short of refreshing and heartwarming.
As a fan, I’ve always believed that the term “young love” is often associated with the youthful. But every now and then, extraordinary love stories unfold between older individuals, capturing the essence of young love in the most enchanting way. This is beautifully portrayed in the series Only Murders in the Building, where Martin Short’s Oliver and Meryl Streep’s Loretta embody just that. Intriguingly, one of their poignant scenes from Season 3 moved Streep to tears, as she reveled in the delight of portraying a heartwarming, blissful romance.
In the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” Loretta was a suspect at one point, but what truly mattered was that she became Oliver’s romantic interest after he chose her for his play, “Death Rattle Dazzle.” During an interview with Decider regarding Season 4, co-creator John Hoffman shared insights about the chemistry between Streep and Short, and he described a scene that moved Streep from Prada to tears. I’m certain this isn’t the most heartwarming moment imaginable!
One evening during Episode 5 of Season 3, we filmed on the ferry. We continued shooting until around two in the morning under Manhattan’s most breathtaking night sky. I disembarked at that point and Meryl was there, her eyes brimming with tears. She told me she had waited for me to leave the ship so she could express her gratitude. I was taken aback and she explained, ‘I simply needed to be here when you departed the boat to say thank you.’ She continued, ‘This role allowed me to perform scenes I never thought I’d get a chance to do. To play romantic roles at this stage in my career with such a talented cast, it’s an unparalleled experience.’
Appropriately titled “Ah, Love!”, Season 3 Episode 5 showcases an eventful evening out for Oliver and Loretta. The story unfolds in the actress’s compact living space where they enjoy a rather overdone pork chop dinner, leading to Oliver (the character played by Short) losing a tooth.
In due course, they find themselves on a ferry, Loretta hands Oliver a flask and a joint, and they spend hours swapping tales and chuckling. Although Short’s character was attempting to remove Loretta from the suspect list for Only Murders in the Building‘s Season 3, he simultaneously expressed his feelings towards her, confessing:
I truly love you, Loretta ‘Lucky’ Durkin, and all aspects of you, except for the pork chop incident – something I can never forget or forgive.
In a delightful twist, they were unable to suppress their grins following the event. Streep’s character subsequently explained the concept of the “tooth ferry” to Short’s, as they tossed his misplaced tooth into the water. Undeniably, it concluded with a tender kiss. This peculiar, whimsical, and heartwarming scene is rare in portraying love stories between older couples, according to Streep.
In many popular romantic comedies, the main characters are typically young. It’s refreshing, therefore, to witness mature couples in these narratives, and as the Oscar winner pointed out, it holds significant value for her to portray such roles. Consequently, I can understand why she became emotional after filming the ferry scene.
In the captivating world of “Only Murders in the Building,” I’m delighted to find myself, as a viewer, still witnessing the charming romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short, portraying Loretta and Oliver. As they journey through the complexities of a long-distance relationship in Season 4, their story continues to unfold against the backdrop of our favorite Manhattan apartment building (recently concluded its run on the 2024 TV schedule).
