As a seasoned crime drama enthusiast who has binge-watched countless detective series, I must say that True Detective stands out as one of my all-time favorites. Its unique anthology format allows for fresh stories and characters every season, keeping viewers engaged and intrigued. The fourth season, Night Country, is a chilling masterpiece set in the harsh wilderness of Alaska, with a compelling investigation led by two strong female leads, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.

For many years, detective stories have captivated audiences due to their intriguing premise: the perfect crime, the elusive criminal mastermind, and the clever means of apprehension that keeps minds racing. Some television shows elect to keep the narrative within a single timeline, often stretching out the resolution of a singular case across multiple seasons (as seen in The Mentalist, with Patrick Jane’s relentless pursuit of “Red John”). Conversely, others opt for an anthology format, starting fresh with a new crime and mystery every season.

Among the popular anthology series out there, I’ve found myself captivated by “True Detective,” though it may not be as widely recognized as “American Horror Story.” Despite its lower profile, it has a devoted fanbase, and for good reason. The latest season, set in Alaska, presents a chilling tale of snow and ice-related crimes that offer a unique twist to the conventional crime narrative.

True Detective Is a Great Modern Anthology Crime Series

True Detective is a four-part series without recurring actors, where each season delves into separate investigations of criminal cases. The title itself gives you a clear idea about what it’s all about. Each installment explores a set of interconnected crimes, and eventually, the perpetrator is brought to justice following numerous unexpected developments. Though the premise may appear simple at first glance, each season introduces unique complexities in its storytelling.

In the second series, starring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn, we delve into a narrative that’s heavily influenced by politics as three detectives from distinct regions team up to unravel the murder of a corrupt politician. The storyline also hints at the involvement of an ex-convict in their investigation. On the other hand, the third season introduces Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher. This installment presents a more intricate plot that unfolds across three time periods in the Ozarks, focusing on the quest to find two missing children.

The fourth installment of “True Detective,” titled “Night Country,” represents a complete makeover for the show. To start, there’s a shift in the production team; unlike the first three seasons where Nic Pizzolatto was either writing or directing, this season is entirely helmed by Issa López. This change introduces a more feminine perspective to the series, as it also features two female leads: Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. These alterations were well-received by critics, with Season 4 garnering the highest ratings of the entire series on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a score of 92%.

This story takes place in Alaska, where detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) investigate the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Other crimes pop up as possibly related, such as a Native American woman who was killed and whose tongue was cut off in protest of a coal mine. The style is dark and cold, quite literally, through the use of grey-blue lighting and colorizing and dire real-life shooting conditions. López herself described the season as a “mirror” of Season 1: “Where True Detective is male and it’s sweaty, Night Country is cold and it’s dark and it’s female.”

Prior to the events of “True Detective: Night Country,” there was a two-season Polish series titled “The Thaw.” This show chronicles the journey of detective Katarzyna Zawieja, portrayed by Katarzyna Wajda, as she delves into the mysterious death of a young mother during the harsh Eastern European winter. Her corpse was discovered frozen in a river, and her newborn baby was nowhere to be found. As the investigation proves challenging, Katarzyna must battle not only the elements but also her inner demons to ensure justice is served for the deceased mother and child. The second season centers around the pursuit of a human trafficking network.

If the atmosphere and plot share common ground, “The Thaw” delves into the resilience of female characters amid various external and internal hardships, much like “Night Country.” Despite some criticism for being slightly predictable and stereotypical, many viewers appreciated its distinctive tone, powerful performances, and captivating narrative. If you found “True Detective: Night Country” engaging, it’s likely that you will find “The Thaw” equally enjoyable.

Foreign films and series should never be slept on. In an age where it is common even for native speakers to use subtitles, there is really no excuse not to watch them. And The Thaw is an excellent example. This Polish show did what True Detective: Night Country did, but two years ago, over two seasons, and arguably even better. The gnarliness of the cold winter in an Eastern European country is the perfect setup for murder and makes for an entertaining plot, no matter the language. True Detective: Night Country is streaming on Max, and The Thaw is also available to stream now on Max.
