The Thicket Review | A Riveting & Gritty Western Thriller with Superb Actors

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the depths of cinematic history, I must say that “The Thicket” is a masterpiece that will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the genre of westerns. The raw, unforgiving nature of the storyline mirrors my own life experiences, where survival often depends on one’s wit, determination, and the ability to adapt to harsh conditions.

In an intense, gripping period drama, Juliette Lewis is relentlessly pursued by Peter Dinklage. This gripping tale unfolds from the very first chilling scene, adapted from the renowned novel written by Joe R. Lansdale, titled “The Thicket“. Set in a harsh, icy landscape, this story shows no pity for the weak and downtrodden, as a desperate man seeks out the bank robber who has kidnapped his sister. The film delves deep into humanity’s darkest traits, as characters with some semblance of honor and decency fight for their lives against ruthless villains in a struggle for survival.

Into the Thicket and After a Kidnapped Girl

In the early 1900s, deep in Eastern Texas, the teenage girl Lula Parker (Esmé Creed-Miles) shed tears of sorrow following her father’s demise. Both parents had succumbed to a smallpox outbreak that swept through the rural communities, leaving them lifeless in their bed. Lula’s elder brother, Jack (Levon Hawke), comforted his sister as they waited for their grandfather to arrive for a simple funeral service.

In the midst of another funeral, a masked biker, known as Cutthroat Bill (Lewis), makes a dramatic entrance with a chilling flair. The mourners are startled and frightened as she reveals her slit throat and disfigured face, a wanted criminal. With a raspy voice, she declares she’s there to claim what belongs to her, then forcefully opens the coffin. After this shocking act, Bill has more business in town, as her brutal gang continues their crime spree on horseback.

The day after a series of terrible occurrences, Jack pleads for assistance as an enraged mob readies itself to hang one of the violent outlaws. Cutthroat Bill kidnapped his sister and fled into the harsh wilderness. He’ll go to great lengths to retrieve her. Jack’s announcement of a substantial reward for Cutthroat Bill’s capture piques the interest of a nearby gravedigger. Following an intriguing introduction to their personalities, former slave Eustace Howard (played by Gbenga Akinnagbe) and his associate, Reginald Jones (portrayed by Peter Dinklage), decide to collect that reward.

A Cutthroat Juliette Lewis Versus a Badass Peter Dinklage

1. Bill, known for his ruthless nature, has a fondness for attractive women, and as the story unfolds, it becomes evident why. Lula, terrified from the start of her abduction, hears from Cutthroat that “beauty is short-lived” in a world where predators target young females. With no one else to turn to, sheltered Lula feels cold fear as the thugs of this gang leer at her. She’s trapped in the hands of an unapologetic murderer who keeps her captive solely on a whim.

In one of her most captivating roles yet, Lewis ignites the screen with an exceptional performance that stands out among her illustrious career. The character of Cutthroat Bill is multi-faceted, capable of erupting in violence at any moment. However, she exhibits a peculiar softness when under the influence of drugs or lost in thoughts of her own turbulent past. Born from a crucible of mistreatment and malevolence, Cutthroat Bill imparts deadly wisdom to those brave enough to learn. Lula’s survival may depend on placating her or risking being cast aside like a discarded toy. The intriguing dynamics between Lewis and Creed-Miles make for compelling viewing.

Dinklage has played tough characters in the past, but Jones is on another badass level. He also becomes a tutor of sorts to an ignorant Jack, who spouts Bible verses without really understanding their meaning or purpose. Jones has been abandoned, underestimated, and the brunt of crude jokes his entire life. His tragic backstory is revealed as a foolish Jack gains confidence and attempts to show fortitude. Jones knows that arrogance and hubris lead to a permanent dirt nap. But he intrinsically wants to rescue Lula despite his outward demeanor of a money-hungry bounty hunter. Jones has a kind heart buried deep within his gruff exterior.

A Lethal Peter Dinklage

Director Elliott Lester (of Nightingale and Aftermath) skillfully portrays both groups in an incredibly harsh landscape, where the biting cold, scarcity of food, and need for shelter are relentless challenges. The characters aren’t shown as having endless energy or full stomachs. Jones understands that the fierce winter weather will conceal Cutthroat Bill’s footsteps. They must press on, or else Lula might be lost forever. This film carries a strong sense of urgency, adding to the already high levels of tension and anxiety.

“The Thicket” is a powerful film in every way, leaving viewers shaken after an emotionally intense finale. The main complaint is that it wasn’t longer and more grandiose. The runtime of one hour and forty-eight minutes feels too brief. Compared to the three laborious hours of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon”, audiences found themselves yearning for more of this exceptional western tale, as its characters are deeply developed but leave you craving more depth.”

The Thicket” is a joint effort by Tubi Films, Nomadic Pictures, Estuary Films, and Next Production. On September 6th, it will hit theaters courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films for its theatrical release.”
