Ever since its debut in 2008, it felt like “Twilight” refused to fade from pop culture prominence. And for a valid reason – the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s popular vampire novels significantly enriched the love triangle trope and was a visual treat. Featuring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who were already established indie favorites, the series chronicled the romantic tale between the vampire Edward and ordinary human high school student Bella.
In the four books of this series, the main characters faced different levels of challenges to their bond, such as an unexpected group of werewolves and a higher vampire administration. However, the narrative primarily focused on human feelings. The most significant danger to Bella’s welfare turned out to be something very human. The Cullens were committed to safeguarding their son’s soulmate from the larger dangers of the world. Unfortunately, the threat that was closest to home – Bella Swan’s mother – could not be dealt with in the same way by the Cullens.
Renée Was a Toxic Mother At Best
Bella’s hardships can be traced back to before she crossed paths with Edward, as werewolves placed a bounty on her, and ultimately, she lost her life during childbirth. It appeared that her life was destined for misfortune from the moment of her conception. Renée and Charlie met unexpectedly during one of Renée’s impromptu journeys, which led to an equally unplanned marriage. Charlie was smitten by the free-spirited Renée, who was prone to following the whims of the wind. This led them to move to Forks, Washington, and start a family shortly after. However, when Bella was still young, Renée grew tired of her life with Charlie, leading to their divorce as she embarked on another adventure.
Renee lived her life carelessly, putting her own desires first without considering the repercussions. This pattern left her daughter Bella responsible for managing household expenses and tending to her mother’s emotional needs. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that when Bella understood that Renee’s contentment hinged on traveling with her new husband, Phil, she chose to step away. Desiring not to impede her mother’s ultimate joy, she moved away from their shared life in Forks, a place she didn’t particularly enjoy, as it was where her estranged father resided. At that time, Bella wasn’t close with Charlie since she had spent most of her upbringing in Phoenix.
Bella adored the sunshine and heat of Arizona, but living in the Pacific Northwest felt like being imprisoned. This choice would significantly alter Bella’s life, though her mother, Renee, wouldn’t be aware. Bella remained in Washington while Renee moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where her husband played for a minor league baseball team. The most pivotal decision Bella made for herself was insisting on staying in Forks. Renee didn’t seem to notice this decision, dismissing the numerous warning signs that emerged in her teenage daughter’s life. Renee was self-absorbed and managed to live a worry-free life by essentially making Bella her caregiver.
Bella’s Mother Ignored All the Troubling Signs
One reason for Twilight’s continued relevance is its exploration of the relationship dynamic between Edward and Bella. Despite the unconventional nature of a century-old vampire dating a 17-year-old high school student, their bond was fraught with complexities. While their private affairs may have raised concerns, their public image was disquieting at best.
As a passionate moviegoer, I find it rather astonishing how rapidly Edward and Bella’s relationship intensified. Shockingly, they decided to tie the knot within barely a year of getting acquainted. Yet, even prior to their marriage, there were several warning signs that surfaced in their relationship.
From my perspective, the strength of our bond was unmistakable, even to an onlooker like Charlie. On their first formal date, Bella’s father introduced her to Edward, and by the end of the evening, it was said that she had ended things with him and sped off across state borders, back to Phoenix. Matters escalated when, after letting Bella go free, Charlie found out that she had taken a tumble down a set of stairs before shattering through a window during a flight.
Despite the fact that everyone else was aware that Bella had fled because a menacing vampire was pursuing her, all the adults knew was that she had run away following a date with Edward before his father and he chased her down, leaving her with startling injuries. However, instead of the worry that Charlie felt was warranted, Renee appeared more enchanted by the relationship.
Later on, I found myself becoming increasingly theatrical as events unfolded, culminating in an incident where I mysteriously vanished into the woods, leaving me frozen and despondent. My father, Charlie, was left to grapple with my sudden and inexplicable depression, while my mother, Renée, seemed to have disappeared from the picture altogether. Things only grew stranger when, without so much as a by-your-leave, I jetted off to Italy for reasons I couldn’t adequately explain. Even during our visit to Jacksonville with Edward, Renée made a halfhearted effort at acknowledging my intense bond with him before brushing it aside nonchalantly.

At the hastily arranged wedding of Bella and Edward, Renée found herself in a difficult state. Many people suspected that the couple were eloping, but Renée extended warm congratulations instead. Despite Charlie’s obvious concerns, Renée appeared to think it was completely normal for her daughter to be marrying at 18 a boy she had just met. While Charlie is an exceptional parent with no equal, Renée failed to express any doubts or reservations in this situation.
In essence, Bella’s mother, Renée, was largely indifferent in raising her daughter, often delegating parenting responsibilities to Charlie. This lax attitude was particularly evident at the wedding when she merely called the mural filled with graduation caps “clever,” which seemed more like a compliment than acknowledging its bizarre nature. It might be that Charlie handled Bella’s upbringing competently, causing Renée to adopt a more hands-off approach. However, her neglect of Bella’s needs was profound and persistent. This negligence arguably had a lasting emotional impact on Bella throughout her life.
Renée’s Parenting Informed Bella’s Actions
Looking back on my experiences with Edward, I can now see why some might find my behavior in our relationship peculiar. Unlike most relationships, there wasn’t a strong friendship foundation between us before the romantic aspect emerged. Our shared experience – almost getting hit by a car – was our only real commonality at first.
Edward’s enigmatic nature was undeniably one of the main reasons I was drawn to him, and in hindsight, that made perfect sense, especially after discovering his true identity.
Throughout her life, Bella had been the caretaker and mature one in her relationship with her mother. What could be more captivating than encountering someone capable of caring for her in return, for the remainder of her days? Edward, being robust, swift, and long-lasting, would make an excellent romantic companion. Even his somewhat dominant character might not appear unusual to Bella. Given that she had always been responsible for managing everything within her mother’s household, it could be a welcome change to find someone eager to take on that role.
Edward tended to control almost every facet of Bella’s life, showing an overprotective concern for her safety. This protection extended to the point where he prohibited her from seeing her friend and werewolf, Jacob. Although Edward’s actions were not healthy, Bella might not perceive them as problematic. Being wealthy and coming from a family that didn’t have financial concerns would significantly lighten Bella’s emotional burden.
In the books, Bella’s behavior towards Charlie, often taking on parental responsibilities, starkly contrasted with her relationship with him. Bella typically cooked dinner and even did her father’s laundry. She was concerned about leaving Charlie alone when she transformed into a vampire. Recently moved out from her mother’s house, Bella continued to act as the caretaker in her relationship with an adult figure. Perhaps this explains why she hurried into a serious relationship with Edward so swiftly, forgoing the typical teenage experiences. Instead, Bella chose monogamy and committed herself to the first person she encountered, effectively binding herself to him forever.
From this viewpoint, Bella can be seen as an incredibly tragic figure. Her life was predestined for misfortune, primarily due to Renée’s self-centered parenting. Each choice Bella made seemed to bring her closer to death and ultimately turning her into a teen mother of a half-human, half-monster creature. Moreover, the destruction she inadvertently caused to those around her was significant, but her emotional torment was far more severe.
